Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Crystal Palace host face Chelsea at Selhurst Park on 14/10/17 as Roy Hodgson finally looks to stop the rot with his new side. Palace were thrashed 4-0 away to Manchester United last time out, while Chelsea will also have a point to prove after losing 1-0 at home to Manchester City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given their current form at the start of this season, it’s difficult to envisage Crystal Palace getting a positive result this weekend. I’m going for a comfortable Chelsea win, with the champions likely to be fuelled by their defeat to Manchester City a fortnight prior.

Crystal Palace Preview

It really is an almighty slump that Crystal Palace find themselves in at this moment in time, with their misery being further compounded by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United prior to the international break. Their inevitably defensive gameplan was thrown out of the window just three minutes into the contest, as Juan Mata fired United into an early lead. Marouane Fellaini scored either side of half-time before Romelu Lukaku added a fourth in the final five minutes, as Palace mustered just one shot on target all game. Freddie Ladapo - who was playing for Margate this time twelve months ago - is the club’s only fit senior centre-forward at present, having made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford and may now be handed a huge opportunity to lead the line in the absence of Christian Benteke through injury. Finding positives from this season is almost impossible for Palace, but they could be boosted this weekend by the return of Wilfried Zaha from injury after the winger returned to training. Despite that, defeat here would make it eight defeats from eight for the Eagles and with a severe crisis of confidence heading into the rest of the campaign.

Crystal Palace Team News

Connor Wickham and Christian Benteke are both missing with knee injuries. Scott Dann (knock) and James Tomkins (illness) will be checked, while Wilfried Zaha (knee) could return.

Chelsea Preview

If Antonio Conte could go back in time and re-play Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, he almost certainly would make radical changes to his tactical approach to the game after showing Pep Guardiola’s men far too much respect at Stamford Bridge. Just from Conte’s team selection alone it was clear Chelsea were going to play on the back foot, with that fact becoming all the more evident when Alvaro Morata went off injured and was replaced by Willian over Michy Batshuayi, leaving them with no prototypical striker on the pitch. A lack of goal threat was soon punished as Kevin De Bruyne struck home the game’s only goal in the 67th minute, leaving Chelsea six points off the Premier League leaders after seven games. It also ended what was before it an extremely positive week for the club, having won 4-0 away to Stoke City and then went on to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 away from home in the Champions League. The goal now switches to continuing their excellent away form at the start of this season, having started with four wins from four in all competitions when on their travels under Conte.

Chelsea Team News

Both N’Golo Kante and Alvaro Morata are set to miss out here with hamstring problems. Danny Drinkwater (calf) remains doubtful as he waits to make his Chelsea debut.
