Crystal Palace vs Bolton Wanderers Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Crystal Palace host Bolton Wanderers at Selhurst Park on 17/01/17 as Sam Allardyce faces his former side in an FA Cup third round replay. Allardyce is still waiting for his first win as Eagles boss after watching his side fall to a 3-0 defeat at the weekend in the shape of another old club West Ham. Bolton meanwhile were beaten at the hands of Swindon Town, losing 2-1 on home turf. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Crystal Palace Preview

Crystal Palace made it eight games without a win last time out, going down 3-0 to London rivals West Ham United as Allardyce’s wait for a victory at his new club continues. The anticipated bounce which was expected to come from the former England manager’s arrival is yet to come to fruition, with Palace still showing much of the same traits as was present under Alan Pardew. West Ham’s goals all came in the second half, with Sofiane Feghouli, Andy Carroll and Manuel Lanzini all finding the back of the net for the home side, who were in just as desperate need for the points as their counterparts. Palace looked toothless in attack, with Christian Benteke struggling once again to have any real impact on the game and getting him firing is essential to them turning their form around. Palace’s player of the season Wilfried Zaha is also absent at this moment in time due to his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations, making the next month or so even more difficult for them. Finalists in this competition last season, Palace enjoyed a fantastic run in the FA Cup in 2016, although it was unable to spark a turnaround in the Premier League; something which is essential with the team currently above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Bolton Preview

Bolton were on the receiving end of one of the shock results in League One at the weekend, falling to a 2-1 defeat at home to Swindon Town. David Wheater put the hosts in front early in the second half, but the game was soon turned on its head in the final twenty-five minutes. Ben Gladwin equalised for the Robins before Yaser Kasim won the game for the strugglers in the 89th minute to stun Phil Parkinson’s men. The Trotters have now failed to win in their last three matches in all competitions, slipping five points off the automatic promotion places in the process, although they will still fancy their chances of making the top two come the end of the campaign. Promotion will be the ultimate goal for Bolton this season, although they will welcome the opportunity to have a crack at Premier League opposition with little pressure placed on their shoulders. Both of Bolton’s FA Cup wins have come at the Macron Stadium this term, as they now go in search of their first away win in the cup competitions since January 2013.

Crystal Palace Team News

Steve Mandanda (knee), Pape Souare (broken leg), Jonathan Benteke (knee) and Connor Wickham (cruciate ligament) are all ruled out of this one. Bakary Sako and Wilfried Zaha are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations and miss this one.

Bolton Team News

Mark Howard (thumb), Mark Davies (cruciate ligament) and Darren Pratley (knee) are all ruled out for Bolton, who otherwise have a fully-fit squad.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Crystal Palace have really struggled as of late, but Sam Allardyce’s record suggests he is too good a manager to let this slump go on and Selhurst Park. As a result, I’m backing the home side to go through to the fourth round in this one.
