Croatia vs Ukraine Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The top two teams of the World Cup qualifying group I will square off on Friday night, as Croatia welcome Ukraine at the Stadion Maksimir. Croatia managed a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Iceland back in the middle of November 2016 thanks to a brace from Marcelo Brozovic. Meanwhile, Ukraine won 1-0 at home over Finland, with Artem Kravets scoring the winner for Andriy Shevchenko’s side. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all on SBAT.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m expecting a close game as the most recent three meetings between these two sides have ended in draws. Although, I’m backing goals at both ends of the pitch as these two teams bagged 17 goals between them after the opening four rounds. Croatia are huge favourites to win, but Ukraine proved to be a strong side on the road over the past year, having won four and drawn three of their last seven competitive away fixtures.

Croatia Preview

Croatia’s World Cup 2017 qualifying campaign has been near impeccable so far, as they have won three and drawn one of their opening four qualifiers. They kicked off the campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Turkey, but they bounced back with three consecutive wins over Kosovo, Finland and Iceland in the last three rounds. The Croats looked impeccable at both ends of the field in their most recent three group fixtures, scoring nine goals and conceding none in the process. Croatia looked solid in their Euro 2016 group stage campaign, as they beat Spain to top their group. However, they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat in extra-time at the hands of the eventual European champions Portugal in the round of 16. Regarding their currently WC qualification process, Croatia sit comfortably on top of the group I table with 10 points under their belts after four rounds, two points clear of 2nd-placed and their Friday’s opponents, Ukraine. Their home form has also been good, as the Croats are undefeated in their last twelve competitive home fixtures, winning eleven and drawing once in the process. Furthermore, Croatia are unbeaten in their three home meetings with Ukraine in all competitions, scoring at least two goals in each of these. It’s undeniable that Croatia’s midfielder is world class as they rely on the Real Madrid duo of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, along with Ivan Rakitic from Barcelona, Ivan Perisic from Inter and Milan Badelj from Fiorentina. Mario Mandzukic is expected to lead the attacking line, as the experienced striker netted a hat-trick against Kosovo and the winner against Finland.

Ukraine Preview

Meanwhile, Ukraine are also unbeaten after four rounds in this World Cup qualifying campaign, drawing two and winning two in the process. They drew against the strongest sides in the group in the shape of Iceland and Turkey, but managed to win over Kosovo and Finland without conceding a single goal in the process. The Ukrainians are currently on a three-game winning streak across all competitions, including a solid 2-0 victory over Serbia in the middle of November 2016. Their back line has been perfect over the past few months, as they kept a clean sheet in each of their last three games across all competitions. Ukraine currently sit in second spot in the group I table with 8 points to their name after four group fixtures, two points off their Friday’s opponents. This is a must-win game for Ukraine, as just one of the group sides is going to earn automatic promotion at the final tournament in Russia, while the second-placed team might have an opportunity in the playoffs. Away from home, the Ukrainians are undefeated in their last seven competitive fixtures, scoring at least two goals in five of these. The previous three meetings between these two sides have ended in draws, and two of these have seen goals at both ends of the pitch. Coach Andriy Shevchenko has named the list of players for this 2018 World qualifier against Croatia, and there are 10 Shakhtar Donetsk players among the caps. However, Ukraine’s most valuable players remain Andriy Yarmolenko from Dynamo Kyiv and Yevhen Konoplyanka from Schalke 04.
