Cork City vs AEK Larnaca Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Cork City and AEK Larnaca will be facing each other at the Turner’s Cross on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League second qualifying round, with both sides looking to continue their good run of form. Cork City managed a comfortable 6-2 aggregate victory over Levadia in the first qualifying round thanks to a hat-trick from Sean Maguire and three other goals from Garry Buckley, Steven Beattie and Karl Sheppard. Meanwhile, AEK Larnaca won 6-1 on aggregate against Lincoln Red Imps, with Joan Tomas and Florian Taulemesse scoring a brace each, while Ivan Trickovski and Jorge Larena netted the other two goals from the spot. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although that AEK Larnaca have more experience than Cork City in the Europa League, the Irish’s home form over the past year has been amazing and they definitely have a big advantage playing this first leg in front of their own fans. Furthermore, Cork City managed to beat another Cypriot side, Apollon Limassol, in 2006/07 Champions League qualifying. I’m backing Cork to secure at least a draw here, but I’m not expecting too many goals.

Cork City Preview

Cork City come into this tie on the back of an amazing 25-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, winning 23 of these. They had no problems against Levadia Tallinn in the previous round, registering a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win. Sean Maguire netted a hat-trick in the second leg of the tie and continued his amazing goalscoring form with a winner in Cork’s narrow 1-0 home win over St. Patricks in the Irish Premier Division at the weekend. Cork City have enjoyed a splendid domestic campaign this season as they sit comfortably at the top of the league table, 12 points clear off the second-placed Dundalk. The Irish looked very strong going forward recently as they managed to score at least two goals in eight of their last nine games across all competitions, including six against Levadia in the previous round. At home, Cork City are currently on a 20-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in 18 of these. Sean Maguire is definitely the player to watch here as he is currently the Irish Premier Division’s topscorer with 19 goals under his belt, and he also managed a hat-trick in the second leg of Cork’s two-legged tie against Levadia in the previous qualifying round.

AEK Larnaca Preview

On the contrary, AEK Larnaca won 6-1 on aggregate over the Gibraltarian side Lincoln Red Imps in the previous qualifying round. AEK Larnaca finished only in 2nd in the Cypriot First Division, but this was enough to book themselves a place in the Europa League qualifying. The Cypriots enter the fray on the back of a ten-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, conceding just two goals in the process. Away from home, AEK Larnaca are currently on a six-game undefeated run in all competitions, keeping four clean sheets in the process. AEK had an impressive run of form in the Europa League qualifiers last year as they managed to reach they play-offs where they suffered a disappointing 4-0 aggregate loss at the hands of Slovan Liberec. The bad news is that AEK Larnaca aren’t regarded as good travellers in the Europa League, as they have only won three of their last nine European away fixtures. Ivan Trickovski has been AEK’s most dangerous player throughout the First Division regular season as he managed a decent tally of 14 goals in 26 league appearances.
