Chile vs Germany Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The World champions Germany will face the Copa America winners Chile in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup final at the Krestovsky Stadium on Sunday, with both teams looking to get their hands on the trophy. Chile had an exhausting Semi-final clash with Portugal, as they needed to win a penalty shoot out in order to book their place in the Final. On the contrary, Germany managed a comfortable 4-1 victory over Mexico in the other Semi-final thanks to a brace from Leon Goretzka and two other goals from Timo Werner and Amin Younes. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

There is a bit of contrast between these two, as the Chileans squad has been together for several years and they are already settled as a team, while Germany have been more like an experimental team at this tournament. Furthermore, Germany proved that they have a lot of firepower in their ranks, but they also showed some weakness at the back. Meanwhile, Chile have the extra experience and they played very cautious. It’s difficult to separate these two sides, but the Germans are usually taking the Finals very seriously.

Chile Preview

This will be the second meeting between Chile and Germany at this tournament as they played out a 1-1 draw in the second round of the group stage phase. The South Americans kicked off their 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup adventure with a 0-2 win over Cameroon, but only managed two 1-1 draw in their last two group fixtures. However, this was enough for them to book their place into the Semi-finals as they finished second in the group B table with just two points behind their Sunday’s opponents. The bad news is that Chile have drawn their last three games, including their nil-nil draw through extra time against Portugal in the Semi-finals. The most interesting fact is that their sole victory of the tournament was in the opening round against Cameroon, when they were without some key men. Antonio Pizzi’s men showed that they are taking this competition very seriously and they definitely have enough firepower within their squad through Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas. The latter proved to be Chile’s most dangerous player in front of goal over the past few years, as he has scored 34 goals in 73 appearances for the national team, while Sanchez managed 37 in 111 appearances. Head-to-head, Chile are winless in five meetings with Germany across all competitions, losing four in the past and drawing 1-1 in the group stage at this tournament.

Chile Team News

I’m expecting Chile to use the same starting lineup as they did against Portugal, with Eduardo Vargas, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez leading the attacking line.

Germany Preview

Things have gone very well for Joachim Loew at this tournament so far despite the fact that he brought a youthful and inexperienced squad in order to give his senior key players a rest. Germany topped their group table with seven points following back-to-back victories over Australia and Cameroon along with a 1-1 draw against Chile. They followed this up with an impressive 4-1 victory over Mexico in the Semi-finals, taking their tally to 10 goals in four fixtures in the tournament so far. Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner are Germany’s joint topscorers with three goals each, while Lars Stindl has also helped the team with two. Furthermore, Julian Brandt, Emre Can and Joshua Kimmich have bagged six assists between them. However, Germany’s defensive frailties could be a problem as they have conceded at least once in each of their four games at the tournament. Actually, the only team not to have scored against the Germans this year are the minnows, San Marino. In addition, Germany came back from behind to level the game in the first meeting with the Chileans and the South Americans had plenty of goalscoring opportunities in that game.

Germany Team News

Meanwhile, Joachim Loew has plenty of options, but I guess that he will go again with the 3-4-2-1 formation that he used it against Mexico. Timo Werner will be the sole striker, while Julian Draxler and Lars Stindl will sustain him from behind. Leon Goretzka should be in the starting lineup as he is one of Germany’s topscorers, but it remains to be seen who will join him in midfield as Loew preferred Rudy instead of Liverpool’s Emre Can last time out.
