Chile vs Australia Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Chile will be looking to top their 2017 FIFA Confederations group B table when they face Australia at the Otkyrtiye on Sunday afternoon for the final group fixture. Chile threw away a one-goal lead following Alexis Sanchez’s early goal to register only a 1-1 draw against Germany on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Australia fought back from one-goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Cameroon thanks to a penalty goal from Mark Milligan. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Chile need at least one point here in order to qualify further in the competition, while Australia need to win if they are to play in the Semi-finals. I’m expecting an entertaining affair with goals at both ends of the pitch. Actually, the most recent two meetings between these two sides have seen both teams getting on the scoresheet and ended with at least three goals scored.

Chile Preview

Chile picked up a comfortable 0-2 victory over Cameroon in the opening round and followed this up with a 1-1 draw against Germany in the second one. This leaves Chile on top of the group B table due to a better goal difference than the 2nd-placed Germany. This means that they already have one foot in the Semi-finals and a draw against Australia will secure their way into the next stage of the competition. The Chileans have enjoyed an impressive run of form over the past few months, losing just twice in their last 13 games across all competitions. They have scored at least two goals in four of their last six games across all competitions, but they also looked very solid at the back throughout this tournament. The South Americans have conceded just once in two group fixtures so far, which is the best defensive record in the group. Chile are also having a decent World Cup qualifying campaign, as they find themselves in 4th in the standings, just one point off the 2nd-placed Colombia. Chile should feel confident ahead of this tie as they have won the last two meetings with Australia across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in each of these.

Chile Team News

Chile have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this clash.

Australia Preview

Meanwhile, Australia struggled for fluency over the past few months, winning just two of their last nine games across all competitions. They were thrashed 0-4 at home by Brazil in a friendly fixture ahead of this tournament and followed this up with a 2-3 loss at the hands of Germany in the opening fixture of their FIFA Confederations Cup adventure. They managed to snatch their first point at this tournament on Thursday as they fought back from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Cameroon. The Socceroos currently sit only in third in the group B table tied on one point with the bottom-placed Cameroon. Although they are lacking pace up front, Australia still managed to score three goals in their two group fixtures. Tomi Juric, Tom Rogic and Mark Milligan are Australia’s joint topscorers with one goal each at this tournament so far. The good news is that Australia are undefeated in their last five away games across all competitions, scoring at least once in each of these. Furthermore, the Socceroos managed to find the back of the net at least once in each of their last two meetings with Chile.

Australia Team News

Rogic, Juric and Kruse have all been substituted towards the end of the game against Cameroon and I’m expecting them to be back into the starting lineup here.
