Chicago Fire vs Sporting Kansas City Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Chicago Fire enter into the first league game of the 2018 MLS season with a decent run of form in the friendly matches. Veljko Paunovic saw his team manage wins over the likes of Orlando City in the pre-season friendly games, while the team looks to go deep into the play-off rounds. Sporting Kansas City fell to a 2-0 home defeat against New York City in their first league game of the campaign. Patrick Vieira’s team were clinical in the game and scored in either half through Maximiliano Moralez and Jesus Medina. Maxime Chanot was sent off late in the game and Kansas City came closest to scoring through Gutierrez’ free kick that hit the woodwork.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The away matches were not a forte of Sporting Kansas City last season. After the opening day defeat, manager Peter Vermes will be keen not to suffer a second consecutive loss. This could lead to a defensive approach from Kansas, who had the best defensive record across both tables in the 2017 MLS season. Fire have retained most of the successful squad from last season and home advantage is likely to work in their favour. I would back a win for Chicago Fire. Games between these two teams have been tight affairs, as the strong Sporting Kansas City defence rarely allows opponents to run away with the game. The last five home games for Chicago Fire against Kansas City has produced four wins and all of those victories have had a winning margin of just one goal. I would back Chicago Fire to have winning margin of one goal.

Chicago Fire Preview

The opportunity to open the campaign with a bang will delight Paunovic, as Chicago Fire were one of the best teams when it came to home matches last season. Toronto were the only team to possess a better home record than Chicago in the Eastern Conference last season. The departure of David Accam is the significant blow for Chicago Fire, as manager Paunovic has been able to retain most of the squad that dominated the first few months of last campaign. Chicago will have learnt about the importance of staying at the top of the game throughout a season in order to be successful in the MLS.

Chicago Fire Team News

Paunovic continues to have a lengthy injury list with Daniel Johnson (ankle), Luis Solignac (hip), Richard Sanchez (hand), Grant Lillard (knee), Jonathan Campbell (cheekbone), Michael de Leeuw (cruciate ligament), and Djordje Mihailovic (cruciate ligament) unavailable.

Sporting Kansas City Preview

After having had one of the best home records last season, Kansas City Wizards had a shock home defeat to start the new campaign. The loss against New York City did provide Kansas City with some positives, but the big worry for the team will be the goals. The club has focused once again on strengthening the defence and this has led to the arrival of players like Brad Evans. Summer signing Felipe Gutierrez had a great opportunity to score on his debut, but he looks like a promising player.

Sporting Kansas City Team News

Khiry Shelton (leg) and Brad Evans (back) are unavailable for Kansas City Wizards.
