Chelsea vs Watford Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea welcome Watford to Stamford Bridge on 21/10/17 as the home side look to bounce back from a dodgy spell of form. Chelsea drew 3-3 to Roma in the Champions League in midweek, while Watford upset Arsenal with a 2-1 win in their last outing. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Antonio Conte was left seething at his team’s performance after they lost a two-goal lead to Roma in midweek. Though Watford are in good form, Chelsea will really have a chip on their shoulder this weekend and I’m backing them to bounce back and produce a reaction to their recent struggles.

Chelsea Preview

Something’s just not quite clicking for Chelsea at this moment in time, as they failed to close out the win against Roma after taking a two-goal lead in the Champions League. David Luiz’s long-range effort gave the Blues the lead early on, before Eden Hazard finished well from Alvaro Morata’s pass to make it 2-0. However, Roma came back into the game in style, with Aleksandar Kolarov’s solo goal pulling them within touching distance before Edin Dzeko’s stunning volley drew them level. Dzeko’s header momentarily put Roma in front, before Hazard sealed his brace to ensure both teams left Stamford Bridge with a point. That result means it’s now no wins in three for Chelsea, who have lost two and drawn one since defeating Atletico Madrid 2-1 away from home at the end of September. In the Premier League, they have suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since September 2016 following defeats to Manchester City and Watford. The last time they lost successive league games it was followed by thirteen Premier League wins on the bounce, ten of which were accompanied by a clean sheet, something they would likely have to replicate in order to keep pace with Manchester City.

Chelsea Team News

Victor Moses, N’Golo Kante (both hamstring) and Danny Drinkwater (calf) are all set to miss out for Chelsea here.

Watford Preview

It’s fair to say Watford are the season’s surprise package in the early part of this campaign, after they maintained their excellent form with a 2-1 win at home to Arsenal at the weekend. Per Mertesacker gave the Gunners the lead with a thumping header before half-time, but the game changed as Troy Deeney was introduced from the bench. Richarlison then controversially won the Hornets a penalty after being brought down by Hector Bellerin, which Deeny confidently dispatched. Then, as the game entered stoppage time, Tom Cleverley netted a dramatic 92nd minute winner to see Watford leapfrog Arsenal - as well as this week’s opponents - in the table, moving up to 4th place in the process as their excellent start continues. Marco Silva has completely transformed this Watford team since arriving in the summer, turning what was at times last season a dull, uninspiring side to a vibrant attacking outfit this time around. Having defeated Arsenal last weekend, it’s unlikely that they will now be daunted by the possibility of a trip to Stamford Bridge here, though they are without a win at Chelsea since May 1986 when the late Graham Taylor was in charge at Vicarage Road.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul (hamstring), Craig Cathcart and Nathaniel Chalobah (both knee) and are all ruled out for Watford here. Sebastian Prodl (thigh) and Isaac Success (leg) are doubtful.
