Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on 22/04/17 as the Premier League’s top-two sides meet in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday evening. Chelsea produced one of their poorest performances of the season last weekend as they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United. Tottenham, on the other hand, closed the gap between the two sides to just four points as they beat Bournemouth 4-0 at home. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is set to be an exciting clash between by far and away the two best teams in the country this season. With a win apiece in their two meetings this term, it should be a close game to call, but I’m expecting the form side Tottenham to come out on top with a place in the final.

Tottenham win - 7/4

Tottenham win and both teams to score YES - 9/2

Dele Alli to score first - 5/1

Chelsea Preview

Antonio Conte will have been bitterly disappointed with the performance of his side at Old Trafford last Sunday as they were convincingly beaten 2-0 by Manchester United. An injury to Marcos Alonso in the warmup forced a readjustment to the Chelsea defence which appeared to unsettle the balance of the side. It took United just seven minutes to find themselves in front, as Ander Herrera played in Marcus Rashford who finished clinically past Asmir Begovic. Herrera then got himself on the scoresheet, firing into the back of the net via a deflection as Conte saw his side fall to just their fifth defeat of this Premier League season so far. Talk of feeling the pressure has crept in from the exterior voices outside of Stamford Bridge, but Conte’s calm demeanour suggests otherwise. He has a real chance to replicate the achievements of another Italian manager in Carlo Ancelotti, who also pulled off a league and cup double in his first season at Stamford Bridge. With two defeats in their last four, they’ve hit - by their standards - a slightly rocky patch at the wrong time of the season, although it must be taken into account they are the only losses they’ve suffered since losing to Tottenham on January 4 thirteen games ago. Four-time winners of this competition since 2007, Chelsea have been the most dominant side in the FA Cup in the past decade as they now look to get their hands on the trophy for the first time since 2012.

Tottenham Preview

Tottenham will have taken real hope from the past weekend’s action, as they closed the gap between themselves and Chelsea to just four points after a 4-0 victory over Bournemouth. It was their second successive 4-0 win in the Premier League and they were sent on their way by Mousa Dembele and Heung-Min Son in the opening 20 minutes. Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen added strikes in the second half to add gloss to the scoreline and leave Spurs in a confident mood coming into this huge clash. A win here may well do wonders for Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the title race, also, adding further pressure to Chelsea’s season to hold onto their lead to make this season a success. However, for Pochettino, this presents a real opportunity for him to break his trophy drought as a manager, having yet to lift any trophies since retiring from playing. Long-term, this would also be a huge boost to the Tottenham squad, many of which are also yet to win a major trophy in their careers thus far. With nine wins and a draw from their last ten matches in all competitions, Spurs are in great form at this moment in time, but still have the Wembley hoodoo hanging over their heads, having struggled there in European competitions also this season. They also lost to Chelsea at this stage of the FA Cup the last time the Blues won it back in 2012, being humiliated 5-1 at Wembley and were beaten 209 by Chelsea in the 2015 League Cup Final.

Chelsea Team News

Thibaut Courtois (ankle) will be assessed, with Asmir Begovic set to start in his absence, although Marcos Alonso, who also missed the defeat to Manchester United, should return. Willian will hope to start having featured regularly in the FA Cup this season.

Tottenham Team News

Danny Rose remains absent for Spurs with an ongoing knee problem so Ben Davies should continue at full-back. Erik Lamela (hip) and Harry Winks (ankle) are both out for the season, while Michel Vorm (knee) is a doubt.
