Chelsea Preview

There was a strong feeling of motivation for improvement from Chelsea on Tuesday night, after they stormed to a comfortable 3-1 win away to Huddersfield Town. Chelsea were put ahead midway through the first half when midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko made a powerful burst into the box and was found by Willian, before producing a classy finish over Jonas Lossl. Willian then got his name on the scoresheet with a header from Marcos Alonso’s cross, with the Brazilian then getting his second assist of the game when he teed up Pedro for Chelsea’s third. Laurent Depoitre netted a consolation late on for the home side, but it wasn’t to put much of a mark on what was ultimately a strong and professional performance from Antonio Conte’s men. Conte hasn’t been quick to hide his displeasure at his side’s upcoming schedule, though the Italian wasn’t quite so critical last season when Chelsea had no European commitments at it was their rivals left fatigued as they cruised to the title. He has himself already conceded the title to Manchester City, with Chelsea already 11 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side after suffering four defeats in their first 17 games. However, with four wins in a row at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League coming into this game, they should be full of confidence that another three points is coming their way, having put the shame of the West Ham performance behind them.

Chelsea Team News

David Luiz (knee) is set to miss out once again for Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen impressing in defence.

Southampton Preview

Southampton were completely torn apart at home to Leicester City in midweek, with Claude Puel enjoying a successful return to St. Mary’s with an emphatic 4-1 win to drop Southampton into the bottom half. Riyad Mahrez’s effort from distance put Leicester in front inside the opening 11 minutes, while Shinji Okazaki and Andy King both scored before half-time to stun St. Mary’s. Maya Yoshida temporarily restored hope for the Saints, but Okazaki’s goal eight minutes later secured a fourth win in a row for the Foxes - Southampton are now without a win in four. Despite being a defensively solid team over recent seasons, Southampton have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight games in the Premier League, perhaps as a result of throwing caution to the wind in order to try and become more potent in attack. Although the Saints had failed to win in any of their previous three games before Leicester, encouragement could be taken from the fact their performances were vastly better than had been in weeks prior. However, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United to come in three of their next four games, the defeat to the Foxes was a game they really could’ve done with getting a result from.

Southampton Team News

Cedric Soares (hamstring) and Shane Long (calf) are both unlikely to feature once again.
