For all of Newcastle’s efforts away to West Brom in midweek, this is a huge step up in class for them to face and I can’t see them having enough to stop Chelsea this weekend. Home win.

Chelsea Preview

Whilst it may not have been the most spectacular of victories, results such as Chelsea’s grounded out 1-0 win over Swansea on Wednesday evening are generally the kind of results that are looked back upon as crucial in the grand scheme of things. Antonio Rudiger was the unlikely hero for Chelsea, scoring the only goal of the game ten minutes into the second half as N’Golo Kante’s deflected effort was drilled in the direction of the German who headed home from close range. The victory also came without the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Eden Hazard in the starting XI, as Antonio Conte perhaps gave a hint as to how he’s going to utilise his squad over the Christmas period, with Chelsea already playing five more games than was the case this time last season due to Champions League commitments. The Blues have won their last three home matches in a row coming into this meeting, but have already lost the same number of league games at Stamford Bridge this season than they did in the entirety of last. Due to Michy Batshuayi’s injury, Alvaro Morata remains Chelsea’s only fit senior striker available to them at present, leaving a lot of pressure on the shoulders of the Spaniard to remain fit this season.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea are set to be without David Luiz, Charly Musonda (both knee), Kenedy (muscle) and Michy Batshuayi (ankle), all of whom are suffering through injury.

Newcastle United Preview

Newcastle United managed to somewhat stop the rot away to West Brom last time out, battling from behind to draw 2-2 at The Hawthorns. Prior to the game, the Magpies had lost four straight games in the Premier League and it seemed as if that streak would continue after they fell two goals behind after 56 minutes, with Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Field getting on the scoresheet. However, the team showed great character to fight back and earn a point, with Ciaran Clark starting the comeback which was completed seven minutes from time when Jonny Evans netted an own goal. Rafa Benitez issued something of a rallying call to his players and the club’s fans before the game, believing that whilst they are now unable to bring in new players, it is vital they stick together through the inevitable difficult times. The West Brom result is one they will hope to build from, particularly the manner in which they were able to gain it in difficult circumstances. Newcastle have won just one of their last nine games before this weekend’s fixture, and although this is a low-pressure game for them, their next two games after Chelsea are ones they will target victories from. Facing Leicester City and Everton at St. James’ Park after this, failure to pick up wins in either of those games could see them come under real pressure.

Newcastle United Team News

Defenders Paul Dummett (hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (knee) are both back in training, while Jamaal Lascelles (ankle) will be assessed. Christian Atsu (thigh) is ruled out.
