Chelsea vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea take on Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on 08/05/17 as Antonio Conte’s side continue their charge towards the Premier League title. Chelsea turned on the style during their trip to Goodison Park last weekend, winning 3-0 away to Everton. Middlesbrough will have been disappointed to have only taken a point from Manchester City after twice taking the lead in their meeting, eventually drawing 2-2. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Chelsea may well come into this game knowing they could be in touching distance of the title, should Spurs fail to win at West Ham on Friday night. Middlesbrough have no choice but to go for the win and may well leave themselves exposed in doing so, and I’m expecting this Chelsea side to be too strong for them to cope with and for this to be another home win for Antonio Conte.

Chelsea Preview

It’s all about results over performances at this stage of the season and while Chelsea were pretty poor for the first hour of their meeting with Everton last weekend, they moved up a couple of gears to come away with a victory which, to most people, sealed their title success. Pedro opened the scoring out of nothing, with the Spaniard turning and firing past Maarten Stekelenburg with a thunderous left-footed strike. Gary Cahill then bundled in Eden Hazard’s free-kick to double Chelsea’s lead, before substitutes Cesc Fabregas and Willian combined well, allowing the latter to find the back of the net. The performance personified that of champions; showing grit and finding that extra gear when needed even when it may not necessarily be your day. Renowned this season for their defensive work, Chelsea have actually scored eleven goals in their last three games in all competitions, all of which have come from a variety of sources and they seem keen to be proactive in their pursuit of a second Premier League title in three seasons. A solitary defeat to Crystal Palace is the only mark on Chelsea’s previous thirteen home Premier League matches, with a run of thirty-six points from a possible thirty-nine contributing to their four-point gap at the top of the table. Should Tottenham lose away to West Ham on Friday night, Chelsea could then move to within three points of wrapping the title up, should they beat Middlesbrough on Monday.

Thibaut Courtois (ankle) and David Luiz (groin) will both be assessed ahead of this clash after suffering slight knocks. Willian may well have to settle for a place on the bench despite his goalscoring cameo last weekend.

Middlesbrough Preview

Sometimes when you’re at the bottom, the rub of the green just doesn’t go your way and Middlesbrough would certainly testify to that prophecy after they twice lead against Manchester City but came away with a 2-2 draw at the Riverside. Ex-City man Alvaro Negredo converted from George Friend’s cross to give Boro the lead, but his former strike partner Sergio Aguero restored parity after Leroy Sane controversially won his side a penalty which the Argentine converted. Calum Chambers appeared to have won a huge three points for Boro when he struck with thirteen minutes to go, but Gabriel Jesus spared City’s blushes after rising highest to nod in an Aguero cross. Four points from two home fixtures with Sunderland and Man City would generally be considered a decent return for Boro were it not for their current desperate situation. Currently six points adrift at the bottom of the table, they could be relegated on Monday night should Hull win at home to Sunderland and they fail to pick up an unlikely win at Stamford Bridge. Getting any kind of positive result will be an extremely tough ask for a Boro side who are without an away win since the second day of the season when they beat Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light. Their goal here will become much clearer after Hull and Swansea play on Saturday, but the likelihood is they will have little choice but to absolutely go for it at Stamford Bridge.

Victor Valdes (rib), Daniel Ayala (ankle) and Grant Leadbitter (hamstring) are all doubtful for the away side. Alvaro Negredo is set to lead the line once again after getting on the scoresheet against his former side last weekend.
