Chelsea vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on 05/11/17 in a game neither side will feel they can drop points in. Roma humbled Chelsea on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico as Manchester United defeated Benfica 2-0 at Old Trafford. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the way his team were dismantled at Stamford Bridge last season, Jose Mourinho won’t allow his team to be as wide open as they were in that 4-0 defeat to Chelsea. I can see a pragmatic performance for United and for them to take a result from this weekend.

Chelsea Preview

For the most part, Chelsea have been superb under Antonio Conte, but suffered one of their worst evenings under the Italian in his homeland on Tuesday night after losing 3-0 away to Roma. Stephan El Shaarawy's rocket strike gave Milan the lead inside the first minute, before a horrible error from former Roma man Antonio Rudiger allowed the Italian winger to bag his second goal of the night. Diego Perotti scored Roma’s third in the second half as Chelsea fell below the Serie A outfit in their Champions League group. It only helped exaggerate the feeling that all is not well for Conte at Stamford Bridge at this moment in time, and his team’s league performances at home certainly suggest that fact. Chelsea dropped just six points at home in all of last season’s title-winning campaign, but have already dropped seven this term after two wins, two defeats and a draw from their five games at Stamford Bridge. What’s worse is they are yet to beat a direct rival from two attempts, taking a combined point from a possible six against Arsenal and Manchester City - both of whom, like United, they beat at Stamford Bridge last term. Defeat could leave Chelsea a staggering 12 points shy of Manchester City and may ultimately signal an end to their title hopes.

Chelsea Team News

Victor Moses (hamstring) is ruled out, though N’Golo Kante is pushing to be fit enough to recover in time from a similar injury.

Manchester United Preview

Manchester United confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night after comfortably seeing their way past Benfica at Old Trafford with a 2-0 victory. Mile Svilar saved a penalty from Anthony Martial to boost his confidence from the last meeting’s own goal, only to again put through his net, although this time through little fault of his own as Nemanja Matic struck the post and the ball inadvertently went in off his back. Daley Blind made no mistake from the penalty spot in the second half to seal the win for United, who will now turn their main attentions to catching Manchester City until post-Christmas European football commences. United may not have been especially entertaining in recent games, but they certainly know how to grind out results, with five of their last six games featuring under 2.5 match goals. That includes a huge result against Tottenham Hotspur last time out, as Anthony Martial scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. All eyes will always be on Jose Mourinho when he returns to Chelsea, regardless of who he is managing and that will be no different here, particularly following his and Conte’s recent public digs towards each other.

Manchester United Team News

Marcos Rojo (cruciate ligament), Paul Pogba (hamstring), Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) will be missing once again for United.
