Chelsea vs Hull City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea welcome Hull City to Stamford Bridge on 22/01/17 as the Premier League leaders look to continue their surge towards the title. Antonio Conte’s men brushed off the absence of Diego Costa to ease past reigning champions Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium. Hull, too, were on the winning side in their most recent outing, beating Bournemouth 3-1 to boost their survival hopes. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Chelsea Preview

There was no slight indication of Diego Costa’s future distracting his Chelsea team-mates at Leicester last time out, with the Blues remaining consummately professional in their duties during the victory. Goals initially came from an unlikely source, as wing-back Marcos Alonso struck either side of half-time to give Chelsea a two-goal cushion, before fellow Spaniard Pedro sealed the victory with a header. After losing 2-0 away to Tottenham in their previous league meeting, Antonio Conte would’ve demanded an instant response from his players and they gave him just what he was looking for. With Costa now looking as if he will stay with the club at least until the end of the current campaign, things are beginning to look up once again for the club as they look to win their second Premier League title in three years. Now returning to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will be looking to extend their eight-match winning run in all competitions on home turf, last suffering defeat there in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool back in September. With all of their closest rivals playing before themselves, Conte’s side will hope results elsewhere go in their favour to further extend the seven-point lead they currently hold at the top of the Premier League.

Hull Preview

Hull City’s positive start under new boss Marco Silva continued last weekend as they battled back from a goal deficit to beat Bournemouth 3-1. After losing 6-1 at the Vitality Stadium, it seemed it could be much of the same for the Tigers when Junior Stanislas scored from the penalty spot just three minutes in. However, Abel Hernandez headed in Andy Robertson’s teasing cross to level the game at 1-1 heading into halftime. Hernandez then produced a moment of individual magic just after the interval, beating Tyrone Mings one-on-on to slot past Artur Boruc before Mings then deflected Tom Huddlestone’s strike through his own net to seal the win. City are now in the bottom three on goal difference only, catching Crystal Palace who are now level on points with themselves in 17th. Silva appears to have given a real boost to a club who were really on their knees, despite the honest and hard work put in by Mike Phelan under difficult circumstances. The Tigers could end the weekend out of the bottom three if they get a positive result at Stamford Bridge and Crystal Palace lose away to Everton, although it will take a monumental from Hull’s players to take anything out of this game.

Chelsea Team News

Diego Costa returned to training this week and could be involved in the squad for this one. With no current injury concerns, Antonio Conte has a fully-fit squad to select from coming into this clash.

Watford Team News

Moses Odubajo (knee), Alex Bruce (achilles), Markus Henriksen (shoulder) and Will Keane (cruciate ligament) are all ruled out. Ahmed Elmohamady and Dieumerci Mbokani are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations, with David Meyler (knock) and Shaun Maloney (virus) both doubtful.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Chelsea are still on a roll coming into this one, keeping their momentum going away at Leicester last time out. Despite Hull’s recent spirited performance, I’m not expecting them to be able to compete with Chelsea who should enjoy a comfortable victory.
