Chelsea vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Chelsea welcome Burnley to Stamford Bridge on 12/08/17 as the Premier League champions begin the defence of their crown this weekend. Chelsea will be looking to put a disappointing pre-season behind them by getting three points on the board, whereas Burnley’s sole aim this season will be to remain in the division for a third consecutive season. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Chelsea will see this as a game they must take three points from and a convincing performance could put to bed a number of fears that there could be a drop-off from the champions this season. As for Burnley, this looks set to be a really tough game and I struggle to see them getting a result.

Chelsea Preview

As the opening weekend approaches, it could be argued Chelsea are in a weaker position at present than they were at the end of the last campaign after a serious thinning of the squad last summer. Now with European football to contend with, the lack of depth in the squad must be a worry for Antonio Conte, although quality they certainly aren’t lacking. This particular game won’t come as a huge concern for them, although their trip to Tottenham Hotspur the week after will be a huge test of their credentials this time around. Chelsea were excellent at home last season, winning seventeen of their nineteen games at Stamford Bridge, taking 51 points from a possible 57 and only Spurs could boast a better record on home turf. Pressure will be heavy on Alvaro Morata to instantly provide the goods up front following his £58m move and he has big boots to fill, left by Diego Costa.

Chelsea Team News

Victor Moses is suspended after picking up a red card in last season’s FA Cup final. Eden Hazard (ankle) is ruled out, while Tiemoue Bakayoko (knee) is a doubt. Michy Batshuayi and Alvaro Morata will compete for a place in the starting lineup.

Burnley Preview

Sean Dyche pulled off an incredible feat by keeping Burnley in the Premier League last season, with the aim now being to build upon it and do the same yet again. The Clarets enjoyed a successful pre-season after winning four and drawing one of their five friendlies and have made some decent signings in Charlie Taylor, Jack Cork and Jon Walters. Ultimately it was their home form and their home form alone which kept them in the Premier League last season, although they did finish the campaign with just one win in their last six at Turf Moor. Games on the road proved to be a real struggle, as only Hull City managed less than Burnley’s overall total of 7 points away from home, managing just one victory all season. They will need Tom Heaton to be at his very best this weekend if they are to get a result, with a performance replicant of that he produced away to Manchester United last term potentially required.

Burnley Team News

Dean Marney (cruciate ligament) is the only unavailable Burnley player this weekend. Charlie Taylor, Jack Cork and Jon Walters will all be hoping to feature after joining the club this summer.
