Chelsea vs Barcelona Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Chelsea will be aiming to take an early advantage in this Champions League round of 16 tie against Barcelona when they welcome the Catalans at the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night for the first leg. Chelsea finished second to Roma in their Champions League group C table thanks to a record of three wins, two draws and just one defeat. On the flip side, Barcelona have topped their group D, three points clear of the second-placed Juventus. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

It’s a tricky game as both sides looked solid throughout this 2017/18 competitive season. Both have been very well-organized at the back of late, so we don’t fancy too many goals in this one. Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four competitive fixtures. Meanwhile, Barcelona have registered three clean sheets in their last four competitive trips.

Chelsea Preview

Chelsea have struggled for form over the past month, having won just four of their last twelve games across all competitions. However, the Blues have found some good form of late, having won back-to-back games against West Brom and Hull City, scoring seven goals and conceding none in the process. The good news is that Chelsea looked much better on home soil in this term, as they have lost just once in their last 18 competitive fixtures. The negative thing is that Chelsea haven’t been at their best at home throughout this Champions League campaign, having won just once in three home fixtures. Chelsea have already faced Spanish opposition in this season’s competition, as they managed to pick four points from their two meetings with Atletico Madrid during the group stage. Chelsea met Barcelona on 12 occasions so far, all in the Champions League and all since 2000. The interesting fact is that Chelsea are undefeated in their last eight meetings with Barcelona across all competitions. In addition, they have won three of their last four meetings with Barcelona, keeping a clean sheet in two of these.

Chelsea Team News

Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ross Barkley, David Luiz and Marcos Alonso are all doubts, while Isaiah Brown is out through injury.

Barcelona Preview

It’s true that Barcelona haven’t been at their best of late, but they still head into this clash on the back of an eight-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Overall, the Blaugrana have lost just once in their last 30 competitive fixtures. After two consecutive draws in La Liga, Barca bounced back with a comfortable 0-2 away victory at Eibar on Saturday. Regarding their Champions League record, this is Barcelona’s 14th time in the round of 16 over the past 14 years and have won eleven of the previous 13 ties. The interesting fact is that both defeats came at the hands of English sides. However, they still managed to win 13 of their 23 two-legged ties with English teams. Regarding their away form in the Champions League this season, Barca have won just once in three trips, but the good news is that they have only conceded once in this term. Domestically, the Blaugrana sit comfortably at the top of the La Liga table, seven points more than second-placed Atletico Madrid. Lionel Messi is the team’s top scorer in the Champions League so far with just three goals under his belt, but he and Luis Suarez have been sensational in La Liga this season. The pair have bagged 37 goals and 15 assists between them so far this season.

Barcelona Team News

Sergi Samper is missing through an ankle injury, while Jose Arnaiz is a doubt. In addition, Nelson Semedo is out through suspension.
