Games such as these are difficult to call, with there being more on the line for Atletico than there is Chelsea. That said, Chelsea will be desperate to secure secure top spot and need a victory to guarantee they do so, which I’m expecting them to get here.

Chelsea Preview

Eden Hazard was in fine form as Chelsea came from behind to defeat struggling Newcastle United 3-1 at the weekend. Rafa Benitez was making his first return to Stamford Bridge as a manager since his untoward spell in charge of the Blues and his team got off to the perfect start as Dwight Gayle opened the scoring after 12 minutes. It wasn’t to last, though, as Eden Hazard replied just nine minutes later to pull Chelsea level, before Alvaro Morata put Chelsea in front ten minutes before the break. Hazard then scored from the penalty spot in the second half as Antonio Conte’s men remain 3rd in the Premier League table and continued their unbeaten stretch of form. They have been particularly strong at home as of late, winning their last five in a row at Stamford Bridge since their 3-3 draw with Roma in the Champions League. Chelsea have accrued a well-deserved reputation for being a strong home side in the Champions League, having lost just two games in the competition at Stamford Bridge since 2014 - one of the sides to do so being Atletico Madrid. Having Hazard hitting form at this stage of the season is vital for this team, with the Belgian often the lynchpin to their success.

Chelsea Team News

David Luiz (knee) is set to miss out once again for Chelsea. Kenedy (muscle) and Charly Musonda (knee) are also doubts.

Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid produced a rallying second-half performance in La Liga last time out as they, like Chelsea, fought from behind to secure three points at the weekend. The away side took the lead from the penalty spot, as Willian Jose opened the scoring just before the hour mark. Filipe Luis scored the equaliser in the 63rd minute, cutting in from the left and swinging the ball home with his right foot, before Antoine Griezmann scored the winner with two minutes to go. After going eight games without a goal in all competitions, Griezmann now has four goals and two assists in his last three outings, including a brace against Levante in their 5-0 win the weekend before last. Atletico have not lost a game since losing 2-1 at home to Chelsea in the reverse fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano, totalling 13 games unbeaten, though it has been draws that have ultimately led to their underwhelming start to the season so far. Seven of the 13 matches have ended in draws, and three of their five games in the group stages have ended all square. That said, they have won four games in a row in all competitions coming into this game and ultimately need a miracle here, with Qarabag needing to take points off Roma to give them any chance of progression.

Atletico Madrid Team News

Juanfran (hamstring) is ruled out through injury and is Atletico’s only absentee.
