Celtic vs Zenit St. Petersburg Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Celtic will be aiming to improve their European home record when they welcome Zenit St. Petersburg at the Celtic Park on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. Celtic only managed to finish third in the Champions League group B table with just three points to their name after six rounds. Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg have topped their Europa League group L thanks to a record of five wins and one draw in six group fixtures. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both sides have been involved in high-scoring affairs of late, so we expect goals at both ends of the field. On the other hand, it’s a bit tricky to predict the winner of this tie as Celtic are a strong side on home soil, while Zenit have been incredibly solid throughout their Europa League group stage campaign.

Celtic Preview

To be fair, Celtic were never in the race to qualify from a difficult Champions League group alongside Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain. They only managed to collect three points from their six group fixtures, but that was enough for them to book their place into this Europa League stage. The most worrying fact is that the Bhoys have lost all their three Champions League home games this season. Their Europa League home record have also been terrible over the past few years, losing three and drawing two of their last five games. The only positive thing is that Celtic are very close to wrap up another Premiership title as they currently lie at the top of the table, eight points clear of the second-placed Aberdeen. Celtic were undefeated in eight domestic games prior to their unexpected 1-0 defeat on the road at Kilmarnock in their most recent league trip. Scott Sinclair and Leigh Griffiths have both been in fine shape for Celtic this season, but the latter got injured towards the end of January and he is still on the sidelines.

Celtic Team News

Dedryk Boyata, Jonathan Hayes, Leigh Griffiths, Marvin Compper and Stuart Armstrong are all missing through injury, while Tony Ralston and Mikael Lustig are both doubts.

Zenit St. Petersburg Preview

Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg have had a difficult start domestically, but they have been impressive throughout their Europa League group stage campaign. Zenit finished at the top of the Europa League group L table with 16 points to their name after six games. Actually, Zenit amassed more Europa League points and goals in the autumn than any of the other 47 sides en route to qualifying for the round of 32. Zenit are undefeated in seven Europa League games at the moment since a 1-0 defeat at Utrecht last year. Regarding their domestic campaign, Zenit managed to put it back on track of late, but they are still eight points behind the current leaders Lokomotiv Moscow. The Russian Premier League haven’t resumed yet, but Zenit looked solid during the break. The Russians have won five and drawn one of their six friendlies, conceding just three goals in the process. The bad news is that Zenit’s recent away form haven’t been that good, as they have only won once in their last seven competitive trips.

Zenit St. Petersburg Team News

Victor Fayzulin and Branislav Ivanovic are both doubts ahead of this trip.
