Celtic vs Rosenborg Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Celtic and Rosenborg will be facing each other at the Celtic Park on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifying tie. Celtic managed a comfortable 6-0 aggregate victory over Linfield in the previous qualifying round thanks to a brace from Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair, along with another goal from Stuart Armstrong and an own-goal from Mark Haughey. On the contrary, Rosenborg only narrowly made it through after extra-time in the previous round against Dundalk thanks to goals from Tore Reginiussen, Yann Erik de Lanlay and Matthias Vilhjalmsson. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both teams looked solid going forward recently and I’m expecting an entertaining affair with at least three goals scored. Celtic have scored at least two goals in ten of their last 15 home fixtures across all competitions, while Rosenborg have netted at least two goals in nine of their last 13 competitive away games.

Celtic Preview

Celtic made their introduction into European football this season in a bright manner, as they smashed Linfield 6-0 on aggregate. Celtic’s form over the past seven months has been amazing as they have only lost once in their last 35 games across all competitions. That sole defeat came at the hands of Lyon in a friendly fixture two weeks ago. Their form in pre-season has been a complete mixed bag with two draws, two wins and one defeat in five friendlies. On home soil, Celtic have only lost once in their last 15 competitive home fixtures, while winning twelve. Furthermore, the Hoops have won six of their last nine home games in the Champions League. In addition, Celtic have scored at least two goals in six of their last nine Champions League fixtures at the Celtic Park. Another interesting fact is that Celtic have won their last five third qualifying round ties, both UCL and UEL, since losing at the hands of the Portuguese side Braga in the 2010/11 Champions League season. Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair have both looked sharp in the previous round and they should be two of Celtic’s most dangerous players in front of goal on Wednesday night.

Celtic Team News

Cristian Gamboa and Dedryck Boyata are both missing through injury.

Rosenborg Preview

Meanwhile, Rosenborg enter the fray on the back of a six-game undefeated run across all competitions, including a 3-2 aggregate win over Dundalk in the previous Champions League qualifying round. Sandwiched in between their two-legged tie against Dundalk, Rosenborg registered a comfortable 0-3 win over Sogndal in the Eliteserien. The Norwegians sit comfortably at the top of the Eliteserien table with five points more than the second-placed Sarpsborg 08. Rosenborg looked very well-organized at both ends of the field throughout their Eliteserien campaign so far this season, scoring 33 goals and conceding just 13 in 17 league fixtures. Despite their domestic performance, Rosenborg have struggled against Dundalk in the previous round and Celtic is definitely a stronger opposition. In addition, Rosenborg are winless in their last six away games in the Champions League, conceding at least two goals in four of these. However, Rosenborg’s recent away form has been decent as they have only lost once in their last 15 games across all competitions. Milan Jetovic and Matthias Vilhjalmsson are Rosenborg’s joint topscorers in the Eliteserien with seven goals each, and the latter has scored the winning goal in extra-time against Dundalk last week.

Rosenborg Team News

Magnus Stamnestro is still out through a knee injury.
