Cardiff City vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday lunchtime (12:30) Championship fixture is live on SKYTV and features two sides in opposite halves of the division. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Cardiff are on a poor run of late and they were held 0-0 at home to Mansfield in the FA Cup Third Round last time out. In the league, they lost to QPR on January 1st which was a fourth straight defeat.

Sunderland have lost their last two matches going down 2-0 at Middlesbrough in the cup last time out. They also suffered a 1-0 home loss to Barnsley on New Year’s Day in their last league game.

The reverse fixture came on September 23rd at the Stadium of Light and the Bluebirds won that one 2-1. Craig Bryson and Joe Ralls (penalty) got their goals while the Black Cats netted through a Lynden Gooch penalty.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both sides are struggling for form and goals so rather than get involved in the match markets I will take an interest in the goals market. Cardiff have netted three in their last five and Sunderland just two so this is likely to be a low scoring game. Bookmakers have pushed under 2.5 goals low but Under 1.5 still offers some value as does a small interest on the game having no goal.

Cardiff City Preview

It was a terrible festive period for Neil Warnock and the Bluebirds who lost all four league games and were held to an un-needed replay in the FA Cup. They are still though in third place and among the mix for the second automatic promotion spot. At the Cardiff City Stadium, they are three without a win in all competitions and lost their last two in the league. They have the joint-second best home defensive record in the division but have shipped five times in their last two in the Championship. Cardiff are struggling for goals with just three in their last five in all competitions and one in their last three. 66% of their goals have come in the second-half with 31% of these in the final 15 minutes.

Cardiff City Team News

Danny Ward (knee) and Lee Camp (groin) are doubts while Aron Gunnarsson (ankle), Lee Peltier (unknown), Matt Connolly (muscle) and Kadeem Harris (groin) are a few weeks away from a return.

Sunderland Preview

Two defeats in their last three league games means the Black Cats are now back to the bottom of the table. Chris Coleman will hope a return to Wales can inspire a 2018 revival though it looks unlikely he will be given much money to spend in the transfer window. Away from the Stadium of Light, they have shown improvement losing just one of their last four in the league winning two of these. Just one of their last five in all competitions on their travels have gone over 2.5 goals with none of these seeing both teams score. It is now just two goals from their last five for Sunderland and four in their last eight. The problem is not helped by losing top-scorer Lewis Grabban who asked that his loan spell from Bournemouth be terminated.

Sunderland Team News

Jack Rodwell (hamstring) is closing on a return but Adam Matthews (calf), Didier Ndong (ankle), Lee Cattermole (thigh) and Lynden Gooch (hamstring) are doubts. Jonny Williams (shoulder, Darron Gibson (groin) and Laime Kone (knee) are a few weeks away from a return while Duncan Watmore (knee) is out for the season.
