Cardiff City vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday afternoon (12:30) is live on SKYTV and features two sides in need of points at opposite ends of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Cardiff made sure promotion would be in their own hands with a road victory at Hull last weekend.  Seam Morrison was the hero of the hour as he grabbed a brace that gave the Bluebirds three points that their performance deserved.

Reading suffered a comprehensive home defeat to Ipswich last time out which means they are not safe yet.  The expected goals data suggest the score was harsh as the Suffolk side ran rampant at the end with four goals in the final 19 minutes.

The reverse fixture came in mid-December and it ended in a score draw with Joe Bennett and Lee Tomlin netting for the Welsh side.  Mo Barrow and a Callum Paterson own-goal had put the Royals ahead and means they are now four unbeaten in recent meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Cardiff could not have asked for an easier game against a Reading side who look badly out of sorts and although they need a point it would take an extraordinary set of results to relegate them.  The problem is that the weight of expectation is on Cardiff so the price looks too short to be backing them.
The goals markets are also tough to call as if Cardiff get an early goal then they might close shop or if Reading get the early goal and the Bluebirds find themselves ahead at the interval they will have to go for it in the second-half.  A lot of this game then could be dependent on circumstances elsewhere.
I like a couple of players in the anytime scorer markets with Callum Paterson who has three in his last five for the hosts offering value while Mo Barrow is a dangerous player on the counter so also makes sense.

Callum Paterson to score at any time
Mo Barrow to score at any time

Cardiff City Preview

Three victories from their last four has allowed the Bluebirds to keep a one point gap over Fulham with one fixture remaining.  Their goal-difference is inferior by five goals that if the London win their final match then they must also do the same to be promoted.

At the Cardiff City Stadium, they have eight victories and just one defeat in the last nine and that loss came against Wolves.  The Welsh side currently have the best home defensive record in the division though have conceded at least once in each of their last five in front of their own fans.

Sean Morrison has seven league goals for the season and has netted three times in his last two appearances.  Around 62% of the league goals that Cardiff have scored this season have come in the second-half.

Cardiff City Team News

Aron Gunnarsson (knee), Jazz Richards (ankle) and Danny Ward (knee) are all doubts

Reading Preview

The Royals run of just one point from their four previous fixtures means that they are still not guaranteed Championship football next season.  They sit in 19th and have a good goal difference compared to others around them so it would take an unusual sequence of results for them to end up in the bottom three.

Away from the Madejski Stadium, it is five straight defeats and seven without a victory on their travels.  They have failed to find the back of the net in each of their last three and four of their last five on the road.

Each of the last three Reading league matches and seven of their last ten have gone over 2.5 goals.  Around 62% of the goals they have netted in the Championship this season have come in the second-half.

Reading Team News

Tyler Blackett will miss the game through suspension.  Axel Andresson (ankle), Callum Harriott, Paul McShane (both hamstring), Joe Mendez and Stephen Quinn (all knee) are doubts.  Jordan Obita (ligament) and Gareth McCleary (broken ankle) are out for the remainder of the season.
