Cardiff City Preview

Promotion remains the main priority for Cardiff City under Neil Warnock this season and their hopes took no great blow last weekend after drawing 0-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday last time out. Having lost back-to-back away games in the Championship leading up to their trip to Hillsborough, there was a clear intent to somewhat shut up shop from the Bluebirds, who were looking to at the very least keep pace with Derby County, who also drew 0-0 on Friday evening. Still two points behind Gary Rowett’s men in the table, Cardiff are still in a prime position to earn promotion this term, with this providing a test of the standard they can expect to face next season, should they fulfil their ultimate goal. How the wiley Warnock aims to combat Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing style will be fascinating to see, as two polar opposite managers square off for the first time in their careers. Cardiff defeated Manchester City on their last trip to Wales in a famous contest back in 2013, winning 3-2 against the eventual Premier League champions in their previous spell in the top-flight. With nine wins in 14 home games in the Championship this season, Warnock’s side boast an impressive home record coming into this game.

Cardiff City Team News

Lee Peltier (hip), Matt Connolly (calf) and Aron Gunnarsson (ankle) are all ruled out. Danny Ward and Lee Tomlin (both knee) are doubtful.

Manchester City Preview

Manchester City will be aiming to navigate their way to Wembley just days after booking their place in the EFL Cup Final following a 3-2 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Leroy Sane netted City’s opener two minutes before half-time, before Kevin de Bruyne found Sergio Aguero who doubled their lead with a clinical finish. Lee Johnson’s men didn’t go down without a fight, ensuring the Premier League leaders would have to sweat when Marlon Pack and Aden Flint put them on level terms on the evening, before de Bruyne booked their place in the final in the last minute of action. With their place in the EFL Cup Final against Arsenal now confirmed, as well as a 12-point gap at the top of the Premier League established, City have set up what could be a historic season, remaining in a strong position to have success in all four competitions they are currently entered in. Beaten semi-finalists in last season’s FA Cup, City will feel they have a point to prove this time around, with a chance at redemption also coming in the EFL Cup against Arsenal. Guardiola has continued to name a strong side across all competitions this season and expect that to continue here.

Manchester City Team News

Benjamin Mendy (cruciate ligament), Fabian Delph and Gabriel Jesus (both knee) are all set to miss out. Phil Foden (ankle) is doubtful.
