Cagliari vs Sassuolo Match Prediction

By William Hall

Sassuolo look to end their winless run in Serie A on Wednesday night on match day five when they travel to suddenly surging Cagliari. Sassuolo come off the back of a 1-3 loss at home to Juventus on Saturday, while Cagliari won 0-2 away to SPAL on Sunday. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both matches ended in spectacular score lines last season as the home sides took wins in each match. Cagliari won their home match in December of last year 4-3, while the reverse fixture in May ended 6-2 in favor of Sassuolo. That win by Sassuolo is their only win so far in the series, and it did come toward the end of the season. So motivation could be questioned, leaving us to believe that the most likely team to win here will be the home side Cagliari.

Cagliari Preview

Cagliari have made up for a slow start to the Serie A season by winning their last two matches. After losing their first two, albeit to very, very difficult opposition, they wouldn't have been blamed for being low on confidence a little. But instead, they used those results to motivate them going forward. After the international break, they grabbed a 1-0 win over Crotone at home. That was a result they expected to get, and they got just that. And on Sunday they made it two in a row against SPAL by a score of 0-2 on their travels. They forced SPAL, one of the newly promoted sides, into playing a fairly even contest, and despite having slightly less efforts on goal, they still found the back of the net twice. They took a 0-1 lead into the half time interval thanks to a 17th minute goal from Nicolo Barrella. They would see their advantage doubled eventually as Joao Pedro scored in the 68th minute. The goal just about ended all resistance that they would be taking the points, but they could not add any further to it. They will feel very good ahead of this home match, and should be able to walk out with a third straight win given recent history. Joao Pedro now leads the team with two goals, and he also has an assist. Leading in that category is Diego Farias, who teed up him at the weekend.

Cagliari Team News

Goalkeeper Rafael looks set to remain out with a wrist injury until the mid point of October after getting injured at the first of the month for Cagliari.

Sassuolo Preview

The last bit of a success that Sassuolo have been able to taste was their Coppa Italia triumph and then their opening day draw at home to Genoa. Since then, they have been in a real drought for results. And matters have gotten even worse now that winger Domenico Berardi is out injured. Without him, along with the other key players that have left, they are sorely lacking for ideas going forward. Their attack used to be their boon, allowing them to surprise the bigger teams who assumed they would sit back and have very little bite to their game. Nowadays, they are predictable and just not as good as they once were. They have had some difficult matches of late, though, so there is hope that they can turn it around here soon. A 2-1 loss at Atalanta after the international break wasn't all that bad, and it was followed on with a 1-3 loss at home to Juventus on Saturday. The Old Lady were a little angry after their loss to Barcelona in midweek, and they made them pay as Paulo Dybala scored a second hat trick of the season. Sassuolo did get a consolation goal, or so it proved to be in the end, when Matteo Politano scored to give them some hope initially. But Dybala's third restored a two-goal lead and wiped out the 51st minute strike 12 minutes later. Sassuolo have just two goals scored so far, so they would love to break out and score some goals here, as they did last season against Cagliari.

Sassuolo Team News

Key winger Domenico Berardi, one of the chief threats for Sassuolo and an Italian international, is currently out dealing with a short-term foot injury. He's due back either at the weekend, or a little after, but he will miss out along with left back Cristian Dell'Orco
