Caen vs Saint-Etienne Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Saint-Etienne will be looking for a second win in the new Ligue 1 season when they travel to the Stade Michel d’Ornano to take on Caen. The hosts suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road at Montpellier last weekend, with Patrice Garande’s men conceding the goal just before the hour mark. On the other hand, Saint-Etienne picked up a narrow 1-0 home win over Nice thanks to an early goal from Jonathan Bamba. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Four of the previous five meetings between these two sides have seen less than two goals scored, and I think this will be the case in here as well. Caen have failed to score in four of their last five home league games, while St. Etienne have only scored five goals in their last ten competitive away games.

Caen Preview

Caen barely avoided relegation last year as they finished in 17th in the standings, just one point clear of the bottom three. However, Caen have strengthened their squad this summer, particularly their back line as they brought in two central midfielders and two defenders for a total fee of €5.5m. This is a good thing as Caen had a lot of problems at the back last term as they conceded 65 goals in 38 rounds. Caen looked decent at the back last weekend, but they were poor going forward as they only managed one shot on target. They still have their best-attacking players from last season in the shape of Ivan Santini and Ronny Rodelin, but they were pretty quiet against Montpellier. The attacking duo have bagged 24 goals and five assists between them last term. Caen need to improve their home form this season if they are to survive as they were the worst home side in Ligue 1 last term, losing ten of their 19 home league games. The good news is that Caen have won two of their last three home league meetings with Saint-Etienne, keeping a clean sheet in both of these.

Caen Team News

Jordan N’Kololo and Alaeddine Yahia are both doubts, while Jeff Louis and Baissama Sankoh are both missing through injury. The good news is that Nicolas Seube is back in training following his thigh injury.

Saint-Etienne Preview

Saint-Etienne have endured a mixed run of form in pre-season, but they kicked off the new Ligue season brightly, winning 1-0 at home over Nice at the weekend. The visitors had the better ball possession, but Les Verts proved to be more clinical in front of goal and managed to score the winner after just four minutes through Jonathan Bamba. St. Etienne brought in Lois Diony from Dijon this summer for a total fee of €10m and the 24-year-old striker will be looking to carry on his last season’s form, helping Dijon with eleven goals and eight assists. Saint Etienne had problems going forward last term as they had one of the worst attacking records in top ten, scoring just 41 goals in 38 rounds. They have been decent on the road for the first part of the previous season, but they struggled towards the end of the campaign. Their away form over the past five months reads eight defeats, three wins and two draws in their last 13 games across all competitions. The only good news is that Les Verts managed to pick up a 0-2 win at Caen in their most recent trip to the Stade Michel d’Ornano back in October 2016.

Saint-Etienne Team News

Florentin Pogba is missing through an ankle injury, while Erin Jorge Gomes Pinheiro is a doubt.
