Burton Albion vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) clash is an important one at the bottom of the table as it features two of the bottom three. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Burton picked up a useful point at Griffin Park last time out in a 1-1 draw with Brentford. They had a 78th minute Ben Turner goal to thank as they made it four points from their last two on the road. Sunderland suffered a 2-1 loss at Villa Park in their first game in charge under new boss Chris Coleman. The Black Cats were two down after just 49 minutes but fought back through Lewis Grabban but the game ended in a Villa victory. This will be the first ever competitive meeting between these two sides in the history of the Football League.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to find a way to be positive about either side in the match markets given the home side have lost each of their last five at their own ground while the visitors are without a league win at any ground since August. Both teams to score looks a good bet as this happened in ten of the last 11 in the league for the visitors and four of five for the hosts. Over 2.5 goals also looks worth an interest as it has happened in the last six at the Pirelli Stadium and nine of the last 11 in all competitions for Sunderland.

Burton Albion Preview

Four points from their last three fixtures has given the Brewers some small signs of hope about getting out of the bottom three. Three of their next five fixtures come against teams in the bottom six. At the Pirelli Stadium, they have lost each of their last five with both teams scoring in the last three. No side has conceded more goals at their own ground than the 21 Albion have this season. Each of their last six matches has seen at least one goal netted in the final 20 minutes. Around 66% of the goals they have netted this season have come in the second-half with 58% between the 46th and 75th minute.

Burton Albion Team News

Lloyd Dyer and John Brayford (both hamstring) are doubts as is Joe Mason (back). Liam Boyce (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.

Sunderland Preview

If Chris Coleman was unaware of the kind of job facing him at Sunderland he now knows as his side are without a league win since August 13th and sit bottom of the table. Their next two fixtures are against sides in the bottom six so the Black Cats need to start picking up points. Away from the Stadium of Light, it is eight without a victory though four of those have finished all-square. They have though managed to net at least once in seven of their last nine on the road. Lewis Grabban has now netted six times in the last six and has been a lone bright spark for Sunderland. The North-Eastern outfit have failed to keep a first-half clean sheet in their last seven.

Sunderland Team News

Lee Cattermole is available after suspension while Marc Wilson (calf), (knee) and Jonny Williams (knee) are set for a spell on the sidelines. Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone, Josh Maja, Billy Jones (all knee) and Paddy McNair (unknown) are closing in on returns. Duncan Watmore (cruciate) has been ruled out for the season.
