Burnley vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley welcome Sunderland to Turf Moor on 17/01/17 in a third round FA Cup replay which should hopefully entertain more than the original encounter. Burnley recorded yet another home victory at the weekend, beating Southampton 1-0 to move up to 10th in the Premier League table. For Sunderland, Saturday was a tough afternoon, losing 3-0 to Stoke City where supporters began to leave the ground as early as thirty-five minutes in. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Burnley Preview

Burnley moved into the top ten of the Premier League table on Saturday after beating Southampton 1-0 at Turf Moor thanks to returning hero Joey Barton. Barton was making his first Premier League appearance since May 2015 after coming from the bench to score the decisive goal of the game, beating Fraser Forster from 25 yards from a free-kick. It was far from Burnley’s best performance at home this season but yet again proved to be effective, with the Clarets now boasting the third best home record in the division. Twenty-five of their twenty-six league points this season have come from when playing at Turf Moor and only Tottenham and Chelsea have currently taken more points. After winning four on the bounce at home, as well as coming out on top in six of their last seven at Turf Moor, they will be extremely confident coming into this fixture that they will go through to the next round. Sean Dyche has done a tremendous job with his team this season, who have clearly learned lessons from their previous campaign in the top flight in 2014/15 where they were relegated the year after winning promotion. Now ten points above the drop zone, they are in an extremely healthy position and can perhaps focus more on the FA Cup than they once believed was the case at the start of the season.

Sunderland Preview

Sunderland’s recent slump took yet another turn for the worse last time out, with their winless now extending to five matches on the bounce in all competitions. Winning just once in their last eight, David Moyes’ men simply failed to show up in the first half an hour of their clash with Stoke, finding themselves 3-0 down at that stage of the game. Marko Arnautovic scored twice for the Potters - the second of which was particularly outstanding - while Peter Crouch added a third which for some Sunderland supporters proved to be enough. Jermain Defoe pulled one back just before the break but the Black Cats were unable to build on it, with Jack Rodwell missing a glorious chance in the second half to at least make for a nervy ending. Moyes has had some success in this competition in previous years although has never gone on to win it, losing in the final to Chelsea back in 2009 whilst with Everton. His Sunderland side have lost four straight games away from home, conceding twelve goals in doing so, with their most recent away match incidentally coming at Turf Moor, where they were condemned to a 4-1 whitewash. The Black Cats are desperate for a win of any kind at this moment in time and progression here could give them a much-needed confidence boost.

Burnley Team News

Scott Arfield and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (both hamstring) are doubts for Burnley, who otherwise have a fully-fit squad to select from. After his heroics on Saturday, Joey Barton will hope to return to the starting XI after scoring the winning goal at the weekend.

Sunderland Team News

Didier Ndong and Wahbi Khazri are both unavailable due to Africa Cup of Nations commitments. Jordan Pickford, Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore (all cruciate ligament), Lamine Kone (hamstring), Jan Kirchhoff (knee), Lee Cattermole (hip) and Victor Anichebe (hamstring) are all ruled out.

Betting Tips and Predictions

At the very least, we will hope to see a more entertaining fixture than the bore draw witnessed at the Stadium of Light in the first meeting. Burnley have been superb at home this season, making it almost impossible to back anything other than a home win in this one.
