Burnley vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley host Sunderland at Turf Moor on 31/12/16 in a relegation six-pointer which both teams will feel they must take something from to boost their chances of survival. Burnley coincidentally defeated north-east opponents last time out, overcoming fellow promoted side Middlesbrough 1-0 at home. For David Moyes it was an unhappy Boxing Day, returning to Old Trafford for the first time since his sacking and in the process witnessed his side lose 3-1. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Burnley Preview

Burnley earned what could again prove to be a huge home win in the context of their season, winning 1-0 against Middlesbrough in the first of back-to-back home six-pointers. Given their home form this season, Sean Dyche’s side will probably have targeted a minimum of four, if not six points from these two encounters and they completed the first half in the desirable fashion. Andre Gray scored his first goal in ten games for the Clarets, volleying in after Sam Vokes’ knockdown as the pair rekindled a partnership which worked so well in the Championship last term. While their away struggles may remain, they remain solid at home and only Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been better on their own ground than Burnley in the Premier League this season. Now winning four of their last five at Turf Moor, Dyche has made their old stadium one of the toughest to visit in the top flight, always guaranteeing a competitive performance at the very least from his players. From their three home defeats this season, on each occasion they have lost by just a single goal, always remaining within touching distance of their opponents and in the game when playing at home. For Gray, his Boxing Day goal will have done wonders for his confidence and he will now be looking to get his season up and running after earlier controversies.

Andre Gray to score first 4/1

Sunderland Preview

Sunderland couldn’t spare their manager David Moyes an unhappy return to Old Trafford on Boxing Day, losing 3-1 against a Manchester United team who are hitting form ahead of the New Year. Goals from Daley Blind, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and an unbelievable Henrikh Mkhitaryan effort wrapped up a fifth successive win for Jose Mourinho’s side, who are now unbeaten in their last eleven games in all competitions. Fabio Borini’s excellent volley restored some pride for the defeated Black Cats, but did little in the overall context of the game to restore anything for them. Their former manager Sam Allardyce has now taken over at fellow relegation rivals Crystal Palace, making their quest for survival all the more difficult, as they will have first-hand experience of the workings of the former England manager from last season. The Black Cats have picked up just four points away from home this campaign, losing their last three on a row and it would require something of an upset for them to come away from this one with a victory. Playing with a front three of Borini, Victor Anichebe and Jermain Defoe in recent weeks, they are starting to have a real go at teams they are playing and indicates they won’t go down without a fight this season.

Burnley Team News

Dean Marney is set to miss out for Burnley once again through injury. Other than Marney, there are no injury concerns for Dyche heading into this pivotal fixture, so Andre Gray should keep his place for Burnley.

Sunderland Team News

Jan Kirchhoff (knee), Lee Cattermole (hip), Lynden Gooch (ankle), Paddy Mcnair and Duncan Watmore (both cruciate ligament) are all ruled out for this one. However, Javi Manquillo, Jack Rodwell (both hamstring) and Steven Pienaar (calf) are all in contention to return.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Burnley’s home form this season has in truth been remarkable and has given them a real fighting chance of staying in the Premier League for the first time after winning promotion. Sunderland look much more competitive but still lack, in my opinion, what is required to get past Burnley here and the January transfer window could again prove pivotal for them - albeit with restricted funds. Home win.
