Burnley Preview

It was a meeting of the Premier League’s two greatest overachievers on Saturday afternoon, with Burnley keen to stay ‘the best of the rest’ in the Premier League. With the top six featuring the personnel most would expect to see at this stage, Burnley are creeping up on their heels and find themselves level on points with Spurs in 6th, with this fixture leaving them top of the rest of the pack. They took full advantage of Watford’s disadvantage here, with Marvin Zeegelaar seeing red five minutes before half-time, as Scott Arfield scored the opening goal at the end of the first-half to secure a solid 1-0 win. Burnley have been alternating between wins and defeats at present, with each of their previous two victories being followed up by a loss as they now look to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time since mid-November. The Clarets were without key defender Ben Mee at the weekend, with Sean Dyche bringing in Kevin Long for his first Premier League appearance of the season and the Irishman slotted seamlessly into the back four - just as James Tarkowski has done in place of Michael Keane. It highlights how comfortable this squad is with Dyche’s methods and style of play, as well as just how well-drilled this team is regardless of who plays.

Burnley Team News

Tom Heaton (dislocated shoulder), Matt Lowton and Robbie Brady (both knee) are set to miss out here. Ben Mee is also a doubt, while Dean Marney and Jonathan Walters add to the list of knee injuries in the camp.

Stoke City Preview

Stoke City were well and truly humbled by Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, going down 5-1 at Wembley Stadium after a blistering second-half performance. Ryan Shawcross scored an own goal midway through the first half to put the hosts ahead, before they really turned on the style in the second half. Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane both scored inside 2 minutes of each other, before Kane bagged his brace in the 65th minute. Christian Eriksen then got his name on the scoresheet, as Shawcross bagged a late consolation for the visitors ten minutes from time. That’s now three defeats in four for the Potters, winning just one of their last six in the Premier League. With the likes of Swansea, West Ham and Huddersfield getting huge victories at the weekend, Stoke have dropped to 15th in the table and sit just three points above the bottom three, leaving huge pressure on the team to win games over the Christmas period. Facing Burnley, West Ham, West Brom and Huddersfield over their next four games, the Stoke board will surely be demanding a significant points return from the under-pressure Mark Hughes over the next two weeks, especially in the two home games. Stoke have struggled away from home all season, winning just once on their travels in eight attempts so far.

Stoke City Team News

Bruno Martins Indi (groin) is Stoke’s only injury absentee here.
