Burnley vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley welcome Middlesbrough to Turf Moor on 26/12/16 in a six-pointer between two sides who are likely to be fighting towards the bottom end of the table this term. Burnley gave a brave effort but were unable to overcome Tottenham at White Hart Lane in a 2-1 defeat, despite taking the lead. Middlesbrough meanwhile earned a huge three points against Swansea, winning 3-0 at the Riverside against a fellow relegation candidate. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Burnley Preview

Burnley’s recent slump appears to have gone under the radar to a certain extent, with Sean Dyche’s men now winning just once in their last six matches - all other five results being defeats. They started brightly in their last outing in north London, taking the lead in the first half through striker Ashley Barnes as they looked to get their first away points of the new season. However, Dele Alli turned in Kyle Walker’s cross to restore parity, before Danny Rose scored the game’s winning goal in the second half with an emphatic finish past Tom Heaton. Still with just one away point earned all season, Burnley seem to be attempting to maintain their Premier League status in just nineteen games, such is their reliance on winning games and picking up points at Turf Moor. Sixteen of their seventeen points have come on home turf, and a defeat here could potentially leave them inside the bottom three - although Sunderland would have to beat Manchester United away, and Crystal Palace need three points against Watford for that to happen. With three wins in their last four at home, they will feel confident that they can once again pick up a victory in this one.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough bounced back from successive defeats last time out, comfortably beating Swansea City 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium to move up to 14th in the Premier League table. Striker Alvaro Negredo scored twice in the first half to put his side on their way, with Maarten De Roon then adding a third after the interval to seal the victory and leave Bob Bradley’s side three points adrift from safety in 19th. It was a much needed win for Aitor Karanka and his team, who had failed to score in their previous two outings in losing to Southampton and Liverpool. There is a real reliance on goals from Negredo, the Spaniard netting five times in sixteen appearances and he alone is responsible for almost a third of their league goals scored this campaign. Defensively, they have performed well this season and have stumbled upon an excellent central defensive partnership in young English defenders Calum Chambers and Ben Gibson. Since winning away to Sunderland in their first clash on the road, Boro have failed to win away from home in the Premier League in a run which currently extends to seven games. In fact, Boro have won just once in their last twenty-one away games in the top flight since their last spell in the Premier League in 2008/09.

Burnley Team News

Matthew Lowton misses out for Burnley through suspension, so Jon Flanagan should start at full-back. Johann Berg Gudmundsson (hamstring) is a doubt, while Ashley Barnes will hope to keep his place in the team after scoring last weekend.

Middlesbrough Team News

Viktor Fischer came off last weekend with a knee injury and is a doubt for this one, with Karanka left with a straight choice between Stewart Downing or Adama Traore to start out wide. Daniel Ayala (ankle) and Cristian Stuani (foot) is a doubt.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Burnley are making staying in the Premier League extremely hard work for themselves given the way they are travelling this season - leaving themselves nineteen matches to stay up. Middlesbrough haven’t been too dissimilar in their form on the road, although they are picking up draws and that should stand them in good stead. Despite this, I’m expecting Burnley to have too much for them and to come out as winners.
