Burnley vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley face Manchester United at Turf Moor on 20/01/18 as the away team look to - temporarily at least - close the gap at the top of the Premier League table to nine points. Burnley lost 1-0 away to Crystal Palace last time out, while United were comfortable 3-0 winners over Stoke City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester United are beginning to have far more conviction, at least recent results have shown so, while Burnley are facing the toughest spell of their season so far. I’m expecting Jose Mourinho’s side to pick up the victory here.

Burnley Preview

If Burnley fans were living on cloud nine in the first half of the season, they will certainly have come back down to earth over the Christmas and New Year period, after losing their third successive game with a 1-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace. Despite Roy Hodgson’s men missing a number of key players due to injury, they were still able to battle to yet another impressive victory, with Bakary Sako scoring the only goal of the game after 21 minutes. Burnley meanwhile mustered just two attempts on target in the contest, as new loan signing Georges-Kevin N’Koudou was unable to make an instant impact from the bench after joining Tottenham until the end of the season. It is hoped the Frenchman will bring an injection of pace and enthusiasm to a team that is now without a win in seven games in all competitions, having hit perhaps something of a safety blanket in recent weeks. Already on 34 points after 23 games and still sat in 7th place in the Premier League, the Clarets are in no danger of dropping down to the Championship this season and Sean Dyche will need to find a way of eradicating this complacency sooner than later.

Burnley Team News

Robbie Brady (knee) is out for the season, while Stephen Ward (knee), Scott Arfield (hamstring) and Chris Wood (leg) are unlikely to feature.

Manchester United Preview

Paul Pogba was the star of the show for Manchester United on Monday evening as they stormed to a 3-0 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford to make a small dent in Manchester City’s lead at the top of the table. It took all of nine minutes for United to take the lead, as Pogba found Antonio Valencia, who lashed the ball into the top corner with his left foot. Pogba then picked out Anthony Martial, with the Frenchman beating Jack Butland from distance with a first-time finish and Romelu Lukaku got his name on the scoresheet of the season in the second half. United are now unbeaten in 35 games in which Pogba has featured, making it questionable as to why the world’s once most-expensive player fails to receive the credit the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva have lavished upon them for their respective contributions to Manchester City. Now winning their last three in a row without conceding a goal, United look to be refocused and could be set to receive a huge boost should Alexis Sanchez sign before this weekend. Having the motivation of closing the gap on leaders Manchester City even further, as well as avenging dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Burnley in their previous meeting, there is plenty of impetus for United to produce a similar performance to Monday this weekend.

Manchester United Team News

Ashley Young serves the final game of his suspension this weekend, while Eric Bailly (ankle) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (hamstring) are both still missing through injury.
