Burnley vs Lincoln City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley host Lincoln City at Turf Moor in the fifth round of the FA Cup on 18/02/17 as the away side look to cause a huge shock to live long in the memory. Burnley were excellent on Sunday, holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at home to maintain their excellent record at Turf Moor. Lincoln meanwhile will come into this game off the back of four wins on the trot after overcoming Woking 3-2 on Saturday. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Burnley Preview

Burnley provided Chelsea with one of their sternest tests of the season so far when they bravely battled to a 1-1 draw with the runaway league leaders. Pedro opened the scoring for the Blues inside seven minutes as it appeared things would once again go in favour of Antonio Conte’s men. However, on twenty-four minutes new signing and home debutant Robbie Brady curled in a stunning free-kick to ingratiate himself perfectly with the new fans. Both sides created opportunities from there on in, but there was ultimately nothing to separate the two sides as the Clarets again proved their fighting spirit and difficulty to break down on home turf. Sean Dyche’s side are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions at home, making this arguably one of the toughest draws from a competitive standpoint that Lincoln could’ve asked for. In reaching the fifth round, Burnley have seen off Sunderland and Bristol City - both at home, the former in a replay - as they look to make it three home wins on the bounce and into the quarter-finals. Should they come through this and receive a home draw in the quarter-finals, don’t rule Burnley out of making it to Wembley for at least a semi-final appearance.

Lincoln Preview

National League leaders Lincoln will be full of confidence when they travel to Turf Moor having won their last four games in succession leading up to their big day out. At the weekend, they were involved in an exciting five-goal affair, with Matt Rhead opening the scoring nine minutes in, although Gozie Ugwu pulled Woking level two minutes later. Substitute Josh Ginnelly restored Lincoln’s lead in the second half before Rhead added his second and Lincoln’s third, with Fabio Saraiva’s penalty not being enough to see Woking stage an unlikely fightback. Lincoln currently sit top of the National League with a three-point lead over nearest chasers Dagenham and Redbridge, and still have a game in hand on the Essex outfit. Credit is due to Danny Cowley’s side who haven’t allowed the FA Cup to distract them in the league, winning their three games which followed the memorable 3-1 win over Championship side Brighton. They went into that game off the back of a 3-0 defeat away to Barrow four days prior, but have that winning mentality still coming into this one. Lincoln have seen off Guiseley, Altrincham, Oldham Athletic, Ipswich Town and Brighton in reaching this stage of the competition and will now hope to add a Premier League scalp to go with their League One and Championship wins.

Burnley Team News

Jeff Hendrick remains suspended for this cup tie after seeing red away to Watford. Kevin Long (knee) and Steven Defour (hamstring) are both set to miss out, while Dean Marney is out until the end of the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Lincoln Team News

Winger Joe Ward has had his loan extended two months and will be available for this one. Striker Matt Rhead will pose the greatest threat to Burnley’s defence, with the 6 ft 4 in forward netting thirteen league goals this season.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Lincoln’s run to this competition has been nothing short of sublime, having beaten three sides above themselves in the football pyramid. Despite this, Burnley’s home form is just too good to look past and I’m expecting Sean Dyche’s side to book their place in the quarter-finals this weekend.
