Burnley vs Bristol City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Burnley take on Bristol City at Turf Moor on 28/01/17 in a Premier League-Championship meeting in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Burnley were unlucky in their last league outing, losing 2-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in controversial circumstances. Bristol City, too, were on the wrong end of the result in their game, losing 1-0 away to managerless Nottingham Forest. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Burnley Preview

Burnley showed great fight and spirit at the Emirates last Sunday, coming within minutes of taking just their second away point in the Premier League this season. Although Shkodran Mustafi gave the Gunners the lead just before the hour mark, Granit Xhaka’s red card five minutes later saw the Clarets in with a real chance of getting a result. They thought they did just that when Andre Grey’s penalty in stoppage time made it 1-1, but Arsenal then won a penalty of their own - despite Laurent Koscielny appearing to be offside - as Alexis Sanchez nonchalantly chipped the ball straight down the middle of Tom Heaton’s goal to give his side the victory. For Burnley, this has been an excellent start to the campaign, finding themselves sat 13th in the table after twenty-two matches, ten points above the relegation zone. At home, Sean Dyche’s men have won their last five matches in all competitions, finding themselves coming out on top in seven of their last eight at Turf Moor. Only Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal boast a better home record than the Clarets in the Premier League this season, highlighting just how formidable they have been in front of their home supporters. They also have a striker in Andre Gray that’s hit a purple patch of form, finding the back of the net six times in his last seven appearances.

Bristol City Preview

The rot at Bristol City continues to fail to cease, with Lee Johnson’s men struggling to overturn this dramatic loss of form in the Championship. The Robins’ defeat to Nottingham Forest was their eighth on the bounce in the league, with the club now hovering precariously above the relegation zone in 20th. Forest climbed above them in the table with the victory, as Ben Osborn’s stunning free-kick proved to be enough to hand Forest the three points and left City just two points above the relegation zone. Their away form, in particular, has really let them down this season, managing to take just eight points from a possible forty-two on the road as they now travel to a side who boast the 4th best home record in the Premier League. The one shining light for City is that Tammy Abraham has continued to find the back of the net on a regular basis, hitting six goals in his last eight Championship outings after suffering somewhat of a goal drought across October and November. Given just how alarming their league form has been, a run in the FA Cup is unlikely to be high on their list of priorities. That said, they can’t afford to be picky, having managed just two wins in their last sixteen games and needed to attempts to overcome League One side Fleetwood Town in the previous round.

Burnley Team News

Kevin Long and Dean Marney are both ruled out for Burnley, with the pair both sidelined with respective knee injuries. Scott Arfield and Johann Gudmundsson (both hamstring) are doubtful, so Joey Barton is set to start in midfield.

Bristol City Team News

Adam Matthews, Korey Smith (both hamstring) and Gary O’Neil (groin) are all sidelined through injury. Mark Little (hamstring) and Joel Ekstrand (ankle) are both doubtful, as is goalkeeper Ivan Lucic who has a back problem.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given Burnley’s form at home and Bristol City’s terrible run in the Championship, it’s difficult to see this being anything other than a home win. Sean Dyche’s men are fantastic at Turf Moor and I’d be looking to take them on the handicap this weekend.
