Bulgaria vs Sweden Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Sweden will look to extend their lead at the top of the World Cup qualifying group A table when they travel to the Stadion Vasil Levski in Sofia to take on Bulgaria on Thursday night. Bulgaria suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the road at Belarus last time out, with their consolation goal being scored by Georgi Kostadinov in the stoppage time. On the contrary, Sweden picked up a creditable 2-1 home win over France back in June thanks to goals from Jimmy Durmaz and Ola Toivonen. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Bulgaria have enjoyed an impressive run of form at home over the past two years, but the bad news is that they have suffered defeats in each of the last seven meetings with Sweden across all competitions. In addition, the Bulgarians have failed to score in each of those games, while conceding at least three goals in five of these. I’m not expecting too many goals here, but I think that Sweden should be able to grab all three points.

Sweden to win at 3/4

Both teams to score - No at 4/6

Bulgaria saw over 1.5 goals in 5 out of their last 5 games played against Sweden

Sweden have not conceded a goal in 60% of their last 10 games played

Bulgaria Preview

Bulgaria have endured a mixed run of form throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign, winning three and losing three of their six group fixtures. Bulgaria were on a two-game winning streak without conceding a single goal prior to their 2-1 defeat at Belarus last time out. Actually, they managed to beat the Netherlands 2-0 at home prior to their clash with Belarus thanks to a first-half brace from Spas Delev. Bulgaria should feel confident ahead of this tie as they are currently on a four-game winning streak across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in three of these. Actually, the Bulgarians have only lost once in their last seven competitive home fixtures. The bad news is that Bulgaria are winless in their last three home meetings with Sweden across all competitions, scoring just once in the process. They had a great chance of taking 2nd place before their clash with Belarus, but now they only sit in 4th spot in the standings, already four points behind the second-placed France. Conceding has been Bulgaria’s main issue throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign, as they hold the second worst defensive record in group A with twelve goals conceded in six rounds.

Bulgaria Team News

Yordan Minev and Svetoslav Dyakov have been overlooked, while Aleksandar Tonev is missing through injury.

Sweden Preview

Sweden have enjoyed a fantastic start to this World Cup qualifying campaign even without their legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who retired after Sweden’s elimination from the group stage of the Euro 2016. The Swedes sit comfortably at the top of the group A table tied on 13 points with the second-placed France, three points clear of the third-placed Netherlands. Sweden hold the best offensive and defensive records in group A, scoring 12 goals while conceding just four. They head into this tie on the back of a five-game undefeated run across all competitions, including back-to-back wins over Belarus and France in their most recent two qualifiers. The Swedes have been scoring goals for fun in this term, as they found the back of the net at least twice in four of their last five games across all competitions. Overall, Sweden have only lost two of their last eleven games. Away from home, Sweden have suffered a 2-1 defeat in France in their most recent competitive trip, but they are currently on a three-game unbeaten run, including a 2-3 win in Portugal in a friendly game back in March. Emil Forsberg has been Sweden’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this qualifying campaign, scoring three goals in his six appearances.

Sweden Team News

Oscar Hiljemark, Isaac Thelin and Oscar Lewicki have been overlooked, while John Guidetti is out through injury.
