Bristol City vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in need of points in the Championship for differing reasons. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bristol City went down to a disappointing 1-0 loss on the road to Bolton in their last league game. The Robins were a little unlucky not to draw the game never mind lose it but they had to return home empty-handed. Sunderland made it back-to-back league defeats as they suffered a 2-0 home loss to Ipswich Town. They can also consider themselves unlucky as the visitors managed to net with their only two efforts on goal. The reverse fixture came at the end of October at the Stadium of Light and City won on that occasion 2-1. Bobby Reid and Milan Duric got the goals for the visitors while Lewis Grabban netted for the hosts.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bristol City are the most likely winners of this game but the odds reflect this and I could not bring myself to back them given their current form. I though find no appeal in Sunderland who are up against it in their fight to avoid back-to-back relegation. Given the trouble both sides are having in front of goal (both have just three goals in their last six matches) then taking NO in the both teams to score market appeals. Both sides also saw around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half so oppose the time of the first goal which is set at 30:00

Bristol City Preview

The Robins have taken just four points from their last six Championship fixtures a run that has seen them slide down to sixth in the table. This upcoming match is the only of their next four against a team in the bottom-half. At Ashton Gate, they have won four of their last six with the defeats coming against Wolves and Norwich. Eight of their last nine at their own ground have produced a total of exactly two or three goals. A lack of goals has become a recent issue for Bristol City who have blanked in four of their last five in the league. Around 64% of the goals they have scored this season have come in the second-half with 31% in the last 15 minutes.

Bristol City Team News

Frank Fielding, Milan Djuric (both groin) and Callum O’Dowda (ankle) are doubts while Nathan Baker will miss the game through suspension. Matty Taylor (hernia), Eros Pisano (hamstring) and Jens Hegeler (knee) are long-term absentees.

Sunderland Preview

It is tough times for the Black Cats who have lost four of their last five in the league. They sit in 23rd place though it is tight at the bottom with six points separating the six remaining teams. Away from the Stadium of Light, they have lost their last two and three of their last four and have no victory at a top-half side this season. A lack of goals on the road is an issue with just two netted in their last five. Just 22 of the 52 goals that Sunderland have conceded in the Championship this season have come in the first-half. Around 61% of the goals they have scored have come in the second 45 minutes.

Sunderland Team News

Lamine Kone (knee), Marc Wilson, Paddy McNair (both groin) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts. Jonny Williams (shoulder) and Darron Gibson (groin) are a few weeks away from a return while Duncan Watmore (knee) is out for the season.
