Bristol City vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday lunchtime (13:30) game features two sides in the middle third of the Championship table and is live on Sky Sports. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bristol City made it back-to-back draws as they were held on the road at Rotherham in a game that finished goalless. The Robins were marginally the better team but neither side did enough to claim the three points.

Sheffield Wednesday also made it back-to-back draws with a 2-2 home tie with high-flying West Brom. Adam Reach (his second in two games) and Fernando Forestieri had netted to put them two up with five minutes to play but the Baggies fought back to claim a point.

The two meetings between these sides last season saw the Robins win at Ashton Gate 4-0 and it finish scoreless at Hillsborough. It continues a trend that has seen four of their last five meetings go over 3.5 goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that these two sides are on the same points I think that there is little to choose between the pair as sides. Bristol City are a decent home outfit but have won just two of five at their own ground and do not deserve to be so short.  Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have both drawn here and Sheffield Wednesday are comparable to this pair. Even allowing for home advantage the price look wrong so back the visitors along with the draw in the double chance market.

Steven Fletcher has netted on his last two road trips but it is Fernando Forestieri who is the class act in this Owls side and I like him to net at any time here.

Bristol City Preview

The Robins have gone four without a victory following a run prior to that which saw them win four straight. They were tenth going into the weekend action and face six straight against sides not in the top ten.

At Ashton Gate, they have looked solid with two victories, two draws and just a solitary defeat. Marley Watkins and Josh Brownhill have both found the back of the net in two of their last three in front of their own fans.

Bristol City would be in eighth if the season was decided on the first 45 minutes and have been behind just twice going into the break. Around 66% of their goals have come in the second-half with around 53% in the final 30 minutes.

Bristol City Team News

Tomas Kalas (broken jaw), Bailey Wright (quad), Eros Pisano, Frank Fielding (both hip), Mo Eisa and Hakeeb Adelakun (both ankle) are all set to miss the next few weeks while Korey Smith (knee) is out until the New Year.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls are unbeaten in three and have lost just one of their last five though have also won just one with three ending in a draw. They sat 12th going into the weekend (on the same points as their opponents) though the expected goals data is not a fan and has them down in 22nd.

Away from Hillsborough, they have lost three of their last five but have won two of their last three. Steven Fletcher has netted in his last two appearances for the Yorkshire side on the road.

Sheffield Wednesday would be in ninth if the league was decided on half-time scores and they have been level just twice going into the break. Around 58% of their goals have come after the interval.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Marco Matias (hamstring) is a doubt while Joost van Aken (ankle), Sam Winnall (cruciate) and Kieran Lee (knee) are a few weeks away and will hope to return after the international break. Gary Hooper (groin) has suffered a setback and will be out for another month at least.
