Bristol City vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bristol City suffered a disappointing Severnside Derby defeat against Cardiff on Sunday going down 1-0. The Robins saw more of the ball but really struggled to break down the Bluebirds and barely created a scoring chance. Sheffield Wednesday lost their last league game going down 4-2 at home to Aston Villa despite a goal from Sean Clare and Lucas Joao. They were in FA Cup action in midweek when they took on Swansea in a game that they lost 2-0. The reverse fixture came in mid-November at Hillsborough and the game ended in a goalless draw. It makes it two consecutive draws in their meetings and three from their last six battles.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday are not in great form but given these prices should be backed along with the draw in the double chance market. I do wonder if the Owls had their full squad back how much of a difference there really is that much between these sides. The Yorkshire outfit have taken points at Sheffield United and Middlesbrough in recent weeks so have shown they can compete with the top eight. Lucas Joao has netted four times in his last five Championship appearances and at these prices is worth an interest in the goalscorer markets with preference for an anytime scorer play.

Bristol City Preview

The Robins are now without a win in their last five league fixtures and have won just one of their last ten. They are in seventh and have dropped 13 points away from the automatic second slot and are one behind the play-offs. At Ashton Gate, they are unbeaten in their last three though have won just one of their last five. Famara Diedhiou has netted three goals in his last three appearances in front of his own fans. Bristol City have not kept a clean sheet in their last six and in just two of their 17 previous in the Championship. Around 48% of their goals this season have come in the 15 minutes prior to half-time and full-time.

Bristol City Team News

Milan Djuric (groin) and Callum O’Dowda (ankle) are doubts while Matty Taylor (hernia), Eros Pisano (hamstring) and Jens Hegeler (knee) are long-term absentees. Marlon Pack will return after suspension.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have won just two games since the 5th November and taken just seven points from their last ten. Wednesday are in 17th place and are just seven points above the bottom three so still have work to do. Away from Hillsborough, it is five without a victory though three of these have ended all-square including at Sheffield United and Middlesbrough. Their last five on their travels have produced a total of just seven goals. Lucas Joao is in good goalscoring form and has netted four times in his last five Championship appearances. Three of the last five for the Yorkshire outfit have gone over 2.5 goals but only of the previous five had done so.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Jack Hunt (unknown), Jordan Thorniley (concussion), Tom Lees (groin) and Joost van Aken (hip) are doubts while Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are all long-term absentees.
