Bristol City vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Bristol City face Manchester City at Ashton Gate on 23/01/18 in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals. Bristol City drew 0-0 away to Derby last time out, while Man City beat Newcastle United 3-1 at home to return to winning ways. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bristol City were heroic in their efforts at the Etihad in the previous leg, keeping themselves well and truly in the tie. That said, Man City should have too much quality for them and I’m expecting Pep Guardiola’s men to qualify for the final at Wembley.

Bristol City Preview

Bristol City managed to somewhat halt their recent rut on Friday night, after holding Derby County to a 0-0 draw at Pride Park. Losing five on the bounce in all competitions coming into the game - albeit in a tough run of fixtures - it wouldn’t be too far fetched to suggest that this historic cup run may have begun to distract the players from their league commitments, though they showed grit to hold the second-placed Rams. Despite their dip, the Robins remain 5th in the table, clinging onto their playoff spot with a current three-point advantage between themselves and Fulham in 7th. It is in front of goal where Lee Johnson’s men have had particular struggles of late, netting just twice in their last six games, going scoreless in four of those outings. Johnson’s reputation has been enhanced sevenfold nationally since this tremendous run, beating four Premier League teams in a row to reach the last four along with Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal. Bobby Reid’s first-half penalty left Robins fans in dreamland at half-time at the Etihad a fortnight ago, and had it not been for a stoppage time winner from Sergio Aguero, the tie would have well and truly been in the balance. The Championship side will still fancy their chances, but it will be an uphill battle to overturn this narrow deficit.

Bristol City Team News

Callum O’Dowda (ankle) and Milan Djuric (groin) are both set to miss out for the hosts.

Manchester City Preview

Clearly the defeat at Liverpool last weekend left no lasting effect on the Manchester City squad, as the team dusted themselves off and secured a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Newcastle United at the weekend. Sergio Aguero was on top form for the hosts, putting them 2-0 up thanks to a goal in each half, though Jacob Murphy managed to reduce the arrears with a composed finish. However, Aguero scored one more with seven minutes remaining to take home three points for his team, as well as the match ball, to maintain their 12-point lead at the top of the table. City have now won both games that have followed defeat so far this season, as they now attempt to win away from home for the first time since December 27. Still in all four competitions at this stage of the season, there is no ceiling on what this team can achieve, should they stay fortunate with injuries and continue some of the scintillating form witnessed to this point. In truth, Guardiola’s side were fortunate to come away from the first leg with a one-goal advantage, but with it, now enter this game as clear favourites, as they look to avoid suffering the same fate as city rivals United at Ashton Gate and be on the receiving end of a dramatic upset.

Manchester City Team News

Vincent Kompany (calf), Benjamin Mendy (cruciate ligament), Fabian Delph (knee), Phil Foden (ankle) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) are all ruled out.
