Bristol City vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) fixture is live on Sky Sports (behind the red button) and features two sides looking to bounce back from a loss.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bristol City suffered a second successive loss going down 1-0 away to Wigan last Friday evening.  The result was harsh on City who were the better team according to the expected goals data.

Aston Villa have now won just one of their last seven and pressure will be growing on Steve Bruce after a 2-1 home loss to Sheffield Wednesday.  Again the expected goals data suggests the result was harsh with Villa the marginally better side and a point would have been fair.

The two meetings between these sides last season saw the Midlands outfit take four points with a 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate and a 5-0 victory at Villa Park.  Conor Hourihane has two in his last three against the Robins.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to argue with the prices on offer that struggle to split the pair and of the three results the draw might be most likely as both sides look to get back on track after their recent troubles.

Ten of the 14 Bristol City have scored this season and Ten of 15 for Aston Villa have come in the second-half and this leads the way to the bets.  First, take the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring and as both teams to score is a little short try instead both teams to score in the second-half.

Bristol City Preview

The Robins have now lost two straight which put to an end a run of four consecutive victories.  They sit eighth in the league with just one of their next eight against a team in the top third of the table.

At Ashton Gate, they have won each of their last two though before that lost one and drew one.  Marley Watkins has found the back of the net in each of his last two appearances in front of his own fans.

Bristol City are in the top third for goals scored this season with 14 netted lead by Andreas Weimann who has five but none in the last four.  The defence is the joint-eighth best having shipped 11 goals though four of these came in one game against West Brom.

Bristol City Team News

Jens Hegler (knee), Tomas Kalas (broken jaw), Bailey Wright (quad), Eros Pisano, Frank Fielding (both hip), Mo Eisa and Hakeeb Adelakun (both ankle) are all set to miss the next few weeks while Korey Smith (knee) is out until the New Year.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa would have hoped victory over Rotherham was a turning point for them but it is now just one victory in seven.  They sit 13th in the table and seven of their next eight are against teams outside the top ten.

Away from Villa Park, they are without a win in three though two of these matches have ended all-square.  The second city outfit have managed to find the back of the net at least once in each of their last five on the road.

Aston Villa are not struggling for goals with the 15 they have netted joint-fourth best in the division led by three for Jonathan Kodjia.  They have though shipped 14 times which is the joint-fifth worst record in the division and they have kept a clean sheet just once.

Aston Villa Team News

Andre Moreira (knee), Scott Hogan, Keinan Davis (both groin) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are all doubts.
