Brentford vs Wigan Athletic Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the top-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Brentford will be looking to build on their success from last time which saw them defeat Nottingham Forest 2-1. Lewis MacLeod and Ollie Watkins got the goals to give them a victory that was well deserved. Wigan were also victorious in their last fixture as a James Vaughan goal saw them defeat Rotherham. The Latics were probably a little lucky to pick up all three points with little to choose on the expected goals data between the pair. These two sides last met in the 2016/17 with the Lancashire outfit taking four points from these fixtures. In fact, the Latics have lost just one of their eight previous meetings with the Bees.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given their strong home form I can see why Brentford are favourites and while I think they should win against a Wigan side who have struggled on the road it is hard to get excited by the price on offer. The Bees are quick starters and as such I like the idea of getting on them to score their first team goal before the set time of 40:00. Lewis MacLeod has two in three at home in the league this season and he looks worth a little each-way first goalscorer interest.

Brentford Preview

The Bees have made a good start to the Championship season winning three, drawing two and losing just once. They sit fifth in the league table though the expected goals data feels they should be top. At Griffin Park, it is three played three won, nine goals scored and just two conceded which is impressive stuff. In fact, they are unbeaten in eight in the league in front of their own fans and lost just two of 25. Brentford matches are producing a total of three goals per fixture with exactly three each going under and over. The London outfit have been ahead going into the interval in each of their three at home this season.

Brentford Team News

Neal Maupay will return following his suspension while Rico Henry and Emilano Marcondes both remain absent.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics have made a decent start to life back in the Championship with three victories, one draw and just the two defeats. They sit in tenth place though the expected goals data table has them as high as third. Away from the DW Stadium, they have struggled a little losing two of their three with a sole victory coming at Stoke. All three the Lancashire outfit have played on the road this season have seen at least one first-half goal. Wigan matches average 3.17 goals per fixture with four of the six played going over 2.5 goals. They would be as high as second place if the table was decided on games that lasted just 45 minutes.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Michael Jacobs, Gavin Massey (both hamstring), Daniel Burn (foot) and Darron Gibson (groin) are all doubts.
