Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Borussia Dortmund host Tottenham Hotspur at the Signal Iduna Park on 21/11/17 as the home side look to keep their slim chances of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages alive. Dortmund lost 2-1 away to Stuttgart on Friday night, with Spurs going down 2-0 to Arsenal in the north London derby on Saturday. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With nothing riding on this game for Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino could ring the changes for Tottenham with a number of fitness doubts taking part against Arsenal. As such, and despite a recent dip in form, I’m expecting Dortmund to win here.

Borussia Dortmund Preview

Following a blistering start to the Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund now find themselves nine points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich after suffering a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to mid-table outfit Stuttgart. It took the home side just five minutes to open the scoring as forward Chadrac Akolo netted, though they were handed a lifeline as Maximilian Philipp equalised on the stroke of half-time. But another slow start, this time in the second half, allowed Josip Brekalo to restore Stuttgart's lead, and this time they were not caught as Dortmund dropped to 5th in the table. With just one win in their last eight games in all competitions - that coming in the DFB Pokal against third-tier Magdeburg - they are without a victory in the Bundesliga since the end of September, losing four and drawing one of the five games since then. Their Champions League experience hasn’t been much more enjoyable to date, finding themselves 3rd in the group on two points after losing to both Tottenham and Real Madrid, before drawing back-to-back games with APOEL Nicosia. The 1-1 draws against the Cypriot side will almost certainly be the main cause of their undoing in this competition, as they could’ve been just a point behind Real in second had they won both of those fixtures.

Borussia Dortmund Team News

Dortmund could be without as many as eight first-team players here, with Lukasz Piszczek, Sokratis, Omer Toprak, Eric Durm, Sebastian Rode, Christian Pulisic and Alexander Isak.  Marco Reus (cruciate ligament) is a long-term absentee.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Talk of a power shift in north London was put on hold at the weekend as Arsenal comfortably defeated Tottenham 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Mesut Ozil crossed for international teammate Shkodran Mustafi to head the Gunners into the lead ten minutes before half-time, with Alexis Sanchez doubling their lead five minutes later with a close-range finish. Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggled to create chances at the Emirates, coming closest to scoring through Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son but were mainly restricted to half-chances, as they ultimately failed to produce a performance close to what they are capable of. For the excellent job Pochettino has done with this team, they still seem to thrive more in situations where they are the underdogs as opposed to when there is expectancy on their shoulders, just as there was when they faced Arsenal at the weekend. However, there has been nothing but positives to come from their Champions League campaign so far, already securing their progress to the last 16 of the competition following three wins and a draw from their four matches. Defeat here could still result in Spurs finishing top of the group ahead of Real Madrid, with APOEL their opponents at home on the final matchday of the group stages.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) is ruled out, but Victor Wanyama (knee) could feature.
