Borussia Dortmund vs Monaco Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Borussia Dortmund welcome Monaco to the Signal Iduna Park on 11/04/17 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Dortmund will be looking to bounce back strongly after being hammered 4-1 by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena at the weekend. Monaco, alternatively, won 1-0 against Angers away from home to strengthen their Ligue 1 title aspirations. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is set to be a pulsating, open contest, with it likely to be the most entertaining - from a neutral’s perspective - tie of the round. I’m expecting a Dortmund win with Monaco to also get themselves on the scoresheet this Tuesday evening.

Dortmund win - 13/20

Dortmund win and both teams to score YES - 7/4

Over 4.5 match goals - 12/5

Dortmund Preview

Borussia Dortmund fell eighteen points behind leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table, after losing 4-1 to the champions elect of Germany at the Allianz Arena last time out. A blistering start from Carlo Ancelotti’s side saw them ascend into a two-goal lead inside the opening ten minutes, with Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski both finding the back of the net for the home side. Raphael Guerreiro gave them hope with a strike of his own in the twentieth minute, but Arjen Robben restored their two-goal cushion just after half-time. Lewandowski completed the rout from the penalty spot as Dortmund stayed 4th in the Bundesliga table. It’s been a mixed spell for Dortmund in recent weeks, winning two, losing two and drawing one of their last five matches in the Bundesliga as they now look to put that to one side and make the semi-finals of the Champions League. In the last 16, they beat Benfica 4-1 on aggregate, losing 1-0 in their first leg in Portugal before winning 4-0 during the second leg in Germany. They have won their last three home matches in the Champions League, scoring an impressive thirteen goals in the process, with this a game they will feel they need to take an early advantage in. Expect goals between two sides who like to play open, attacking football.

Monaco Preview

Monaco kept up their title hopes at the weekend, after beating Angers 1-0 away from home. Kylian Mbappe was left on the bench for the French side, with manager Leonardo Jardim preferring the experience of Radamel Falcao and Valere Germain up front, from which they were rewarded in the second half. Falcao found the back of the net after good work from Nabil Dirar, as Monaco held on to top spot for another week in Ligue 1. It’s been an incredible campaign for Monaco thus far, who have already reached the French League Cup Final, albeit losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the final, suffering a 4-1 defeat. Their last 16 tie with Manchester City was one of the most entertaining two-legged affairs the competition has seen in recent times, overshadowed in this year’s competition only by Barcelona’s incredible comeback against PSG. Their home form in the Champions League in recent years has been exceptional, winning seven and drawing two of their last nine at home, including wins in each of their last three in a row, scoring eight in those games. However, they haven’t won in their last three away from home in the Champions League, conceding eight goals in their last two on the road, so will be looking to try and tighten up as much as possible at the back this time out.

Dortmund Team News

Mario Gotze is ruled out with a metabolic disorder. Eric Durm (muscle), Gonzalo Castro (groin) and Andre Schurrle (ankle) are all doubts, while Shinji Kagawa (muscle), Julian Weigl and Marco Reus (both thigh) will be assessed.

Monaco Team News

Gabriel Boschilia (cruciate ligament) and Guido Marcelo Carrillo (groin) are both ruled out for Monaco and are their only injury concerns. The biggest dilemma comes in attack, with Radamel Falcao, Valere Germain and Kylian Mbappe all competing for two places up front.
