Borussia Dortmund vs Benfica Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Borussia Dortmund host Benfica at the Signal Iduna Park on 08/03/17 in a finely balanced last 16 Champions League second leg which could go either way. Dortmund will be in a buoyant mood after beating Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 at home on Saturday. Benfica too picked up three points at the weekend, beating Feirense 1-0 away from home. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Borussia Dortmund are always a formidable side at home, especially in the recent vein of form they are showing at this moment in time. Benfica are a stubborn outfit, as shown by their recent run of five clean sheets in seven, but I’m expecting Dortmund’s attacking talent to overwhelm them here.

Dortmund to qualify - 8/11

Dortmund to score over 1.5 goals - 2/5

Dortmund to win 3-1 - 10/1

Dortmund Preview

Borussia Dortmund came out on top in an eight-goal thriller at the weekend, beating Bayer Leverkusen 6-2. Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring after just six minutes before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the lead twenty-minutes later. Kevin Volland pulled one back for Leverkusen in the second half, with the teams exchanging goals in the space of five minutes through Aubameyang and Wendell to make it 3-2. Then, a blitz from Dortmund in the final fifteen minutes saw Christian Pulisic, Andre Schurrle and Raphael Guerreiro saw them win 6-2. Thomas Tuchel’s side have won their last three on the bounce since losing 1-0 to Benfica in the first leg, scoring an incredible twelve goals during that period and are hitting form at just the right time. Their Champions League group stage was littered with goals, with their last home match in this competition ending up in an 8-4 rout for the Germans against Legia Warsaw. Aubameyang has scored four goals in his last two games for Dortmund and, if reports are to believed, has his eyes set on a move to La Liga in the summer, with stages such as these pivotal for him to perform on if he wants to seal such a move. With five wins in their last eight home Champions League games, they must make it six from nine if they want to see their way into the last eight.

Benfica Preview

Benfica secured their seventh win in a row in all competitions last time out, beating Feirense 1-0 away from home to stay a point ahead of Porto in the race for the Primeira Liga title in Portugal. It also proved to be their fifth victory during that period which has been accompanied by a clean sheet, a run which includes the 1-0 win over Dortmund in their first leg. Pizzi scored the only goal of the game at the Estadio Marcolino de Castro, as they look to secure their fourth league title in a row, their thirty-sixth overall. Success in Europe will also be of particular importance to manager Rui Vitoria as he now looks to find a way of keeping Dortmund quiet in front of their rampant yellow wall of support. After losing 4-2 to Napoli in their first away match of the Champions League group stages, Benfica responded with a 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev and a 3-3 draw at Besiktas, results which would see them progress to the last eight here. They also faced Bayern Munich away from home in last season’s knockout stages, losing 1-0 on the road and have lost in all three of their visits to Germany in this competition. Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern have all beaten them, with this being their first Champions League trip to Dortmund.
