Bolton Wanderers vs Wigan Athletic Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is Lancashire derby and features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bolton stretched their winless run to nine going down to a 1-0 road loss to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek. The result was probably a little harsh on Wanderers with the expected goals data indicating they had just about done enough to earn a point.

Wigan put a five-game winless run behind them in midweek with a 3-1 home victory over Blackburn. Gary Roberts, Callum McManaman and James Vaughan (penalty) all netted once to give them a deserved three points.

These two sides have not met since 2015 but for what it is worth the Trotters are unbeaten in their last four meetings with the Latics. Six of their last seven head-to-heads have seen both teams score.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Wigan are favourites to win the game and while they will never have a better chance to win on the road against a woefully short of confidence Bolton this is not for me. I have them as the most likely winners but remember they have no road win this season so at those odds find the value elsewhere.

Wanderers have netted just one first-half goal all season at home and the Latics just five before the break on the road. Backing the half-time draw makes sense and the game to have no early goal which is set at 31:00.

Bolton Wanderers Preview

After a promising start to the season for the Trotters things are going badly wrong with just three points from their previous nine. They have slipped into 23rd and after this have back-to-back games with the current top two.

At the Macron, it has been miserable with four straight defeats and not a goal netted there from these four. The Lancashire outfit have managed a total of just five goals in their nine home fixtures.

1.95 goals per fixture suggest Bolton are not a side to watch for the neutral with them being responsible for 0.63 of these. Only two of their players Josh Magennis (four) and Yanic Wildschut (two) have netted more than once this season.

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Stephen Ireland and Gary O’Neil (both calf injuries) are closing in on returns.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics victory over Blackburn in midweek was just their second in their last ten as they have dropped into the bottom 12. They sit in 15th going into the weekend though two of their next three are against the sides in 23rd and 24th.

Away from the DW Stadium, they have been poor losing eight of their nine including each of their last seven. Athletic have netted just three times from their previous seven road trips which accounts for their poor road form.

2.58 goals per fixture means Wigan are a mid-level side with Athletic being responsible for 1.16 of these. Four of their last six played in the Championship have seen over 2.5 goals netted.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Nick Powell (unknown) and Cheyenne Dunkley (knee) are doubts while Antonee Robinson (ankle), Gavin Massey and Michael Jacobs (both hamstring) are long-term absentees.
