Bolton Wanderers vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features the side third from bottom at home to the team in 11th place. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bolton put to an end a 13 game winless run with an important three points as they defeated Rotherham 2-1. Sammy Ameobi and Gary O’Neil got a goal each in a game with little to separate the sides but the scoreline.

Stoke saw a run of their own come to an end as their ten match run without defeat was halted with a 2-0 loss at Birmingham. The scoreline was harsh on the Potters but they were second best.

The previous meeting between these two came on October 2nd and Stoke came out on top 2-0 thanks to a goal each from Bruno Martins Indi and Tom Ince.  The result was about fair as the Potters were the better team.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke are strong favourites to win the game and while I think they are the most likely winners I am not going to back a side without a win in four on the road at those prices on offer. Nor could I be backing Bolton who have won just one of their last seven in front of their own fans.

Although neither side are prolific scorers the match going over 2.5 goals seems to be the value selection. The hosts have seen two of their last four go over and the visitors have seen two of their last three. With both sides in need of points then both teams to score also makes sense.

Bolton Wanderers Preview

Despite their win on Boxing Day it is just now six points from the last 14 matches for the Trotters. They sit in 22nd place in the table just one point behind Rotherham and Millwall in the battle to avoid the drop.

At the Macron, victory last time out put to an end a six-game winless run in front of their own fans. The last eight games in the league here have produced a combined total of just 13 goals.

The last five Bolton have played in the Championship have seen a combined total of five goals in the opening half. Each of the last four for the Lancashire outfit have seen a goal between the 60th and 70th minute.

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Stephen Ireland (calf) is their only doubt ahead of this fixture.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters have lost just one of their last 11 though they have also won just four of these with six ending all-square. They sit in 11th place which is five places and five points from Derby in sixth.

Away from the Bet365 Stadium, they are without a win in four with three of these finishing level. Benik Afobe has two in his last three appearances on the road netting at Aston Villa and Reading.

Ten of the last 13 goals scored in Stoke matches have occurred in the second-half of the fixture. Five of these ten have come during the final 15 minutes.

Stoke City Team News

Erik Pieters (hamstring) is a doubt while Ibrahim Afellay (knee) is a long-term absentee.
