Bolton Wanderers vs Hull City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (15:00) is an important game at the bottom end of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Bolton registered their first away win of the season last time out coming out on top 1-0 away to Sheffield United. A 21st minute Gary Madine goal was enough to give the Trotters the three points though the Blades can consider themselves very unlucky. Hull looked to be on course for three much needed points when they took on Fulham at the KC Stadium last time out but it ended 2-2. The Tigers were two up through Jarrod Bowen and Nouha Dicko but the visitors fought back in the second-half to claim a point. The reverse fixture came in August at the KC Stadium and the Yorkshire side came out on top 4-0 on that occasion. Jarrod Bowen lead the way with a brace while Kamil Grosicki and Adama Diomande grabbed a goal each.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Hull are the slight favourites to win the game which I find somewhat puzzling. That price comes from two things either their strong first-half showing when they lead 2-0 against Fulham but ended up drawing 2-2 or is it based on the fact the Tigers were in the Premier League last season. Whatever the reason the price is wrong and Bolton must be backed having won three of their last five and four of their last seven in front of their own fans (beating teams like Cardiff, Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday in the process). The Tigers have failed to score in three of their last four on the road while the Trotters have kept clean-sheets in two of their last three so back the visitors to fail to score in this game at generous prices.

Bolton Wanderers Preview

Two victories from their last three has given Wanderers new spirit in their relegation fight as they are amongst several sides involved in the relegation battle and are currently in 22nd position. A lack of money to invest in January is going to make life tough for the Trotters who need to be clever in the market once more. At the Macron Stadium, they are in good form with four victories, two draws and just one defeat in their last seven including a success against Cardiff. Gary Madine has found the net four times in his last five appearances in front of his own fans. The last four Bolton have played have been tight with a total of just six goals netted with these seeing one side fail to find the back of the net. Just 9% of the goals they have scored this season have come in the opening 15 minutes of either half.

Hull City Preview

It is now back-to-back draws for the Tigers and though they have no victory in four they have had a tough run against sides in the top tier of the division. Nigel Adkins will hope that the board will back him in the January transfer window to get some players in for the upcoming relegation battle. Away from the KC Stadium, they have no victory in five and have lost their last two though these were narrow defeats to strong sides in Leeds and Cardiff. Three of their last four on the road have gone under 1.5 goals while the other was a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Jarrod Bowen is the top scorer for Hull this season with ten league goals and after an injury he got back to it with a goal last time out. Around 59% of goals they have scored this season have come in the second-half with 43% in the final 30 minutes.

Hull City Team News

Kamil Grosicki (ankle), Stephen Kingsley (groin), Will Keane, Moses Odubajo (both knee), David Meyler (unknown) and Ondrej Mazuch (hamstring) are doubts. Ryan Mason (fractured skull), James Weir (knee) and Abel Hernandez (Achilles) are long-term absentees.
