Bolton Wanderers vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (20:00) fixture features two sides in need of points at the bottom end of the Championship.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bolton saw their three-game run come to an end last time out as they suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Leeds.  Adam Le Fondre got their goal but by then they were two goals down and could not find a way back into the match.

Birmingham moved out of the bottom three and made it back-to-back victories as they defeated Ipswich 1-0.  A 21st minute Jota penalty proved to be the difference between the sides.

The reverse fixture came early in the season in mid-August and it ended in a goalless draw in the Midlands.  It continues the Blues good head-to-head record as they are now four unbeaten against the Trotters.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers are having trouble splitting the pair and this seems fair.  Bolton are tough to beat at their own place losing just two of their last 14 at their own ground.  Birmingham have won their last two and are starting to look more solid under Gary Monk.

One thing that makes sense is backing the Trotters to score exactly one goal as they have done in the previous seven at the Macron.  In addition, Jota has three in his last two and is on penalties so looks value to net at any time here.

Bolton Wanderers Preview

The Trotters have had a mixed bag of results of late with two victories, three draws and two defeats from their last seven.  They are in 20th place five points above the relegation zone and must face sides around them in Birmingham, Barnsley and Burton.

At the Macron Stadium, they have lost just one of their last eight league games and two of their last 14.  The Lancashire side have scored exactly one goal in each of their previous seven at their own ground.

Just two of the last 18 Championship fixtures that Bolton have been involved in have gone over 2.5 goals.  Around 54% of their league goals this season have come in the second-half and around 41% in the final 30 minutes.

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Stephen Darby (head), Karl Henry (shin) and Darren Pratley (unknown) are doubts.

Birmingham City Preview

A run of two victories under boss Gary Monk has lifted the Blues out of the bottom three and given them hope of avoiding the drop.  Four of their remaining seven are against top ten sides so these next two fixtures (Bolton away, Burton at home) are crucial.

Away from St Andrew’s, they have struggled losing each of their last four those these were all against top 16 opponents.  Each of their last three and four of their last five on the road have seen over 2.5 goals.

Just two of the last nine Birmingham league encounters have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Jota is in good goalscoring form and has netted three times in his last two appearances.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (knock), Sam Gallagher (calf) and Craig Gardener (hamstring) are doubts while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) and Jonathan Grounds (medial collateral ligament) are long-term absentees.
