Bolton Wanderers vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday evening (20:00) fixture is live on SKYSPORTS (behind the red button) and features two sides in different halves of the table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Bolton continued their strong start to the season as they won 1-0 away to Reading thanks to a Yann Wildschut strike. Wanderers were a little lucky to win this game as their opponents saw more of the ball and edged the expected goals data. Birmingham are still seeking their first victory of the season as they drew 0-0 with Swansea in their third and most recent game. They can consider themselves unlucky not to take all three points as the expected goals data shows they were the stronger side. The two meetings between these sides last season saw the Midlands outfit take four points after goalless draw at home they won 1-0 at the Macron. It continues a low-scoring trend with none of their last six head-to-heads going over 1.5 goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The results would suggest that Bolton should be the favourites for this game but the markets have Birmingham as market leaders. This is down to expected goals data which does not rate the home team as highly as the visitors. I could not put you off backing the home side but I will look elsewhere for the value. These sides have just one first-half goal between them and as such I am backing the game to be level going into the break and no early goal which the market has set at 33:00.

Game to be level at half-time

Bolton Wanderers Preview

The Trotters were joint-favourites (along with Rotherham) for the drop but they have taken seven points from their first three fixtures. They sit in sixth place but the expected goals data has them as low as 18th. At the Macron Stadium, they have won just one of their last five though they are unbeaten in the previous two. The Lancashire outfit have seen both teams score and over 3.5 goals in each of their last two in front of their own fans. Josh Magennis and Yanic Wildschut have both started the season well with two goals each from three in the league. Bolton have scored six times in all competitions this season with five of these coming in the second-half.

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Sammy Ameobi (hip) is their only doubt ahead of this fixure.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have picked up just two points from their three fixtures though they have been a little unlucky as expected goals data says they have should won two of these ties. They sit 17th in the Championship table though the expected goals data table suggests they should be up in 11th. Away from St Andrew’s, they have lost both games this season and when adding in the last campaign it rises to five. They have netted just three times in total in each of their last six on the road. Jota has yet to net this season but he looked dangerous against Swansea and is averaging 2.7 shots per game this season. Two of the three that Birmingham have played in the league this campaign have been goalless going into the break.

Birmingham City Team News

David Davis (broken ankle and Isaac Vassell (cruciate) will miss out.
