Bolton Wanderers vs Barnsley Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is an important game at the bottom end of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Bolton will be looking to bounce back from a comprehensive 5-1 defeat at league leaders Wolves last weekend. A 74th minute Will Buckley goal was a mere consolation effort though they are not the first nor will they be the last to be outplayed by the Black Country outfit. Barnsley were in action on Tuesday night and they lost their third straight going down to a 3-0 loss at Reading. Two goals in the first 29 minutes put the game beyond the Tykes who are being sucked into the relegation battle. The last time these two sides met was in the 2013/14 season so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-heads. The Lancashire outfit though have won each of their last three meetings and are unbeaten in their last 11 clashes.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given recent home victories over Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday I feel that Bolton look worth taking here against a Barnsley side who were poor in midweek in losing 3-0 away to Reading. Bolton did lose last time but that was at Wolves which is no disgrace and they can bounce back here to claim a much needed three points. I also like the look of a first goalscorer each-way play on Darren Pratley who has netted in two of the last three at the Macron and goes off at double-figure odds which seems generous in a game with no obvious opening goalscorer.

Bolton Wanderers Preview

Defeat last time out put to an end a run of seven without defeat for Wanderers with five of these finishing all-square so they remain bottom of the table. Three of their next four come at home and just one of these games comes against a side in the top eight. At the Macron Stadium, it is four games unbeaten with two victories and two draws though before that it was five straight defeats. Each of their last four at home have seen both teams score and three of these have gone over 2.5 goals. 11 of the last 14 goals they have conceded have come in the second-half with eight of these coming in the final 15 minutes. 56% of their goals have come in the first-half though just 6% have come in the opening 15 minutes.

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Aaraon Wilbraham (hip) is close to a return while Jem Karacan (personal), Chris Taylor (unknown) and Andrew Taylor (back) are expected to miss out.

Barnsley Preview

It is now three straight defeats for the Tykes and just one point from their last four which has them down in 18th place. This is the first of three road games for them and the only one of their next six they play against a team above them. Away from Oakwell, defeat to Reading in midweek put to an end a four-game unbeaten road and was their fourth road loss of the season. Six of their last seven on their travels have seen both teams score while four of these have gone over 2.5 goals. It is now three games without scoring for Barnsley who have struggled this season to find a regular scorer with just two players having scored more than two goals. Five of the last seven they have conceded have come in the first-half.

Adam Hammill is available after suspension while Lloyd Isgrove (thigh) and Adam Jackson (knee) are doubts
