Blackburn Rovers vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (15:00) features the side in third place on the road to the team in 15th spot. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Blackburn lost their third straight and stretched their winless run to five with a 3-0 loss at Sheffield United last time out. The scoreline was harsh on Rovers but the result was fair and their miserable afternoon was complete when Richard Smallwood was dismissed.

West Brom saw their three-game winning run come to an end but are still nine unbeaten after a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. They needed a 90th minute goal to claim an undeserved point in a game they also had Jay Rodriguez dismissed in.

The reverse fixture came on October 27th at the Hawthorns and ended in a 1-1 draw with Craig Dawson netting for the Baggies and Harrison Reed for Rovers.  The Lancashire outfit rode their luck that day as it was Albion who dominated.

Betting Tips and Predictions

At first glance the price on West Brom to defeat Blackburn looked decent given the recent form of both sides. I do worry about the visitors ability to get goals through with Jay Rodriguez suspended and Dwight Gayle an injury doubt.  While I could not put you off backing Albion I prefer to look elsewhere for the value.

Under 2.5 goals is the outsider here but I actually like the look of that given the nature of the game and that both sides are struggling for goals. The Baggies are missing two key players at the front while Rovers have blanked in two of their last three. This also brings into the equation NO in the both teams to score market in a fixture that might not be the goal feast that it looks at first glance.

Blackburn Rovers Preview

It is now no victories in the last five and just one in the previous nine for Rovers who have slid down to 15th. In the January transfer window they could do with some defensive help as they have the joint-fourth worst ranked defence in the division.

At Ewood Park, they have lost just one of their last five (which came against Norwich) and lost just two all season (the other against Sheffield United). Danny Graham has four in the last three at home and Bradley Dack three in five.

Seven of the last nine matches that Blackburn have played in the Championship have seen both teams find the back of the net. Over 2.5 goals has occurred in their last two and six of their last eight.

Blackburn Rovers Team News

Amari’I Kyren-Bell (illness) and Ryan Nyambe (hamstring) are doubts while Craig Conway (thigh) is a few weeks from a return. Dominic Samuel and Ben Gladwin (both knee) have both been ruled out for the season. Richard Smallwood starts a one-game suspension following his red card.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

The Baggies run of six victories and three draws and no defeats in their last nine has moved them into third and just two behind Norwich in second. They have a strong squad but a recent injury to Dwight Gayle might mean they look for a striker to help them out over the remainder of the season.

Away from the Hawthorns, the Black Country outfit have won four straight netting ten times in this sequence and shipping just three. Harvey Barnes has two in his last four and will have to carry the attacking burden without Gayle and Rodriguez.

None of the last nine West Brom have been involved with in the league have gone under 1.5 goals with six going over 2.5. They have kept clean sheets in two of their last three through the six before that and their most recent (seven of nine) have seen both teams net.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

The Baggies have issues up front as  Dwight Gayle (hamstring) is a doubt while Jay Rodriguez will miss this one game through a suspension.
