Birmingham City vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

The Friday evening (19:45) fixture is a Midlands derby and is live on Sky Sports and comes from St Andrew’s. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Birmingham are still seeking their first victory of the season following a goalless draw with QPR in their last game before the international break. They were lucky to get a point as the visitors from London were the better side. West Brom come into this match on the back of a 2-1 victory over Stoke just before the gap for internationals. A Dwight Gayle brace gave them the three points that their performance probably flattered them a little according to expected goals data. The last time these two sides met was in the 2015 FA Cup and West Brom won that to extend their fact their unbeaten record to four against the Blues. Each of their last four and six of their last seven have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the home side have not lost in eight at their own ground in the league (when combining this season and last) I think they (with the safety if draw no bet) look the call against a West Brom side who have won just one of their three on the road this season and that victory came in a 4-3 defeat of Norwich in a game that the expected goals data suggests they had no right to win. A combined nine of 12 for this pair have been level going in the break and as such this also looks another angle into the fixture.

Birmingham City Preview

It has been a tough start to the Championship season for the Blues who are still awaiting their first win though have drawn four of their six. They sit 20th in the table though the expected goals data believes they should be as high as 11th. At St Andrew’s, they have drawn each of their three in the league this season and are unbeaten in eight. The Midlands outfit has seen the last two in front of their own fans finish without a goal. Just two of the six that Birmingham have played this season have gone over 2.5 goals and four have gone under 1.5. They have been behind just once going into the interval from their six in the league.

Birmingham City Team News

Isaac Vassell (hip) and David Davis (broken ankle) are out for a few months.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

It has been a mixed start to the campaign for the Baggies with three victories, one draw and two defeats. They sit in ninth place with ten points while the expected goals data feels this is about right and has them in tenth. Away from the Hawthorns, they have also had a variety of results with one win, one draw and one defeat. Four of the five the Black Country have scored on the road have come in the second-half. Four of the six West Brom have played have gone over 2.5 goals with the divisional high average of four goals per fixture. Five of the six they have played have been level going into the interval while they have been ahead in the other.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Oliver Burke (knee) is their only concern ahead of this fixture.
