Birmingham City vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture will have important implications at the bottom of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham were in FA Cup Fourth Round action at the weekend where they battled out a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield thanks to a Luka Jutkiewicz goal. In the league, they drew their last game finishing all-square at Preston with Sam Gallagher netting for them.

Sunderland had no FA Cup game at the weekend after going out in the previous round to Middlesbrough. They will be looking to build on their last league fixture which saw them defeat Hull 1-0 at the Stadium of Light thanks to a Joel Asoro effort.

The reverse fixture between these sides came on the 23rd Decemeber and it ended in a 1-1 draw on Wearside. The Blues had Sam Gallagher (in a game he was later sent-off in) gave them the lead only for the Black Cats to level five minutes later through Lewis Grabban and that was where the scoring ended.

Betting Tips and Predicitions

The league shows that there is little between these two over the season and as such I think they might be a touch of value on the visitors in this one. Birmingham have won just two of their last eight and Sunderland have lost just two of their last five on the road in the Championship which includes a draw at Wolves and a victory at Forest. In a game with little to choose I think home advantage has been over-stated so back the visitors and the draw in the double chance market.

The reverse fixture saw both sides score early but I think one will be a more cautious start with neither side wanting to be out of this game too quickly. I could not put anyone off backing a draw at half-time but I will stick to NO goal being scored before 34:00.

Birmingham City Preview

Seven points from their last four fixtures has given the Blues hope in their survival battle though they are still in the relegation places. They are in 23rd place one point and one position beneath their opponents here.

At St Andrew’s, they have lost four of their last five in the league though none of these have been against bottom eight sides. In fact, they still have four of the bottom six still to come to their ground before the end of the season.

A lack of goals has been the issue for Birmingham this campaign with just 16 netted which is five under their nearest rivals. Sam Gallagher has five in his last seven appearances and the Midlanders need him to keep firing if they are to avoid the drop.

Birmingham City Team News

Tomas Kuszczak (groin) is a doubt while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Sunderland Preview

Two victories in their last four and just three defeats from their last eight has given the Black Cats some cause for optimism in their battle to say up. They are in 22nd place and only an inferior goal-difference has them in the bottom three.

Away from the Stadium of Light, they have been a mixed bag of late with two victories, one draw and two defeats. None of their last five league away matches have seen both teams find the back of the net.

They have scored just three goals in their last six which is the joint-third lowest attacking returns in the form table. Only Millwall (11) and Burton (12) have conceded more goals than the six they have let in the last six.

Sunderland Team News

Didier Ndong will miss the game through suspension while Marc Wilson, Paddy McNair (both groin), Billy Jones, (unknown) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts. Jonny Williams (shoulder), Darron Gibson (groin) and Lamine Kone (knee) are a few weeks away from a return while Duncan Watmore (knee) is out for the season.
