Birmingham City vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in contrasting form in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham stretched their unbeaten run to ten and made it three straight victories with a midweek home success over Reading. The 2-1 scoreline was just about deserved and came due to a goal each from Gary Gardner and Lukas Jutiewicz.

Sheffield Wednesday made it back-to-back defeats and can have few complaints as they went down 3-0 to QPR. The Owls struggled to create a chance and a side who the expected goals data has been opposing for a while might have run out of luck.

The two meetings between these sides last season were won by the Midlands outfit who won 3-1 at Hillsborough and 1-0 at their own ground. Jota grabbed a brace in that 3-1 result during the last campaign.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Birmingham should win this game and while I cannot put anyone off backing them I think the prices are a fair reflection and I would look elsewhere to find the value.

At slightly better odds you can get over 1.5 goals for the home side and this looks worth an investment given they have seven in their last three at their own ground. They also face a Wednesday side who shipped three in midweek at QPR.

Lukas Jutkiewicz has six in his last three home fixtures and I like him in the anytime goalscorer markets against a Sheffield Wednesday defence that conceded three in midweek.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues ten game unbeaten run has seen them shoot up the table and many have them as dark horses for the play-offs. Gary Monk has done a great job at the club after battling to keep them from the drop last season.

At St Andrew’s, they have not lost any of their seven this season which saw them draw the first five and have gone on to win the last two. Lukas Jutkiewicz is in remarkable home scoring form with six in his last three.

Eight of the 14 Birmingham have played have gone under 2.5 goals with six of them going under 1.5. Five of the last six and each of the last four home matches they have played have seen both teams score.

Birmingham City Team News

Jacques Maghoma (unknown) and Isaac Vasselll (thigh) are doubts while David Davis (ankle) is a long-term absentee.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have won just one of their last five and two of their last eight though are still in the tightly bunched race for the play-offs. Jos Luhukay has done a solid job at the club though a side who were close to promotion a few seasons ago will want to see more progress.

Away from Hillsborough, it has been a mixed bag with three victories and three defeats from their last six. Four of the previous five the Yorkshire side have played on the road have finished 2-1.

11 of the 14 Sheffield Wednesday league games have gone over 2.5 goals and none of them have gone under 1.5 goals. Their blank in midweek put to an end a run of ten straight in the league where both teams had netted.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Gary Hooper (groin) and Kieran Lee (knee) have been ruled out for the rest of 2018 while Sam Winnall (hamstring) is out for at least another month. Marco Matias (also hamstring), Fernando Forestieri (unknown) and Joost van Aken (ankle) are doubts.
