Birmingham City vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday evening (19:45) game features two teams in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Birmingham put to an end a losing run at the weekend as they claimed a point away to Midlands rivals Derby. Lukas Jutkiewicz netted for the Blues but they had to settle for a point. Sheffield Wednesday saw their recent unbeaten run come to an end in a comprehensive 4-2 home defeat to city rivals United. The Owls were two down after 15 minutes but goals from Gary Hooper and Lucas Joao pulled them level only for the Blades to grab two more and claim the points and bragging rights. The last time these sides met at St Andrews came in September last season and it was the home side who 2-1 thanks to Clyton Donaldson and Lukas Jutkiewicz. Gary Hooper netted in that game and he has three in the last three against Birmingham.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday are the favourites for the game but after a tough bruising encounter at the weekend that they lost I will not be interested in backing them. Despite an improved showing to get a point last time out you could not be rushing to back the Blues here. I think this could be a tight game between two safety first managers and I think we will have to wait for what goals we do see. The under 2.5 markets is priced as such but better value can be had by opposing the time of the first goal at 32:00 and then a smaller stake on the game to be goalless at half-time.

Birmingham City Preview

Following a point from his first game and a glowing reputation in the coaching ranks Lee Carsley might just be the man to continue as manager of Birmingham. He inherits a side who are second bottom of the division with just five points. At home, they have lost their last two and gone three without a victory. A lack of home goals is an issue with just one scored in their last three in front of their own fans while shipping five. Lukas Jutkiewicz is back from injury and the Blues will hope that he finds the scoring form from last season to fire them out of trouble. The average time of their first goal scored is the 39th minute while the average time of the first goal conceded is the 38th minute.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder) and Jason Lowe (hamstring) are doubts while David Stockdale (broken wrist), Che Adams and Jota (both hamstring) are set to miss another few months.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The defeat to Sheffield United at the weekend has undone a lot of the good will Carlos Carvalhal have built up with a recent seven-game unbeaten run in the league. They do have some winnable games coming up so the Owls need to keep the faith. On the road, it has been one victory (over Fulham), two draws and one defeat (against Preston). A lack of goals is a feature of these games with a total of just six from the four fixtures.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

They have registered no injuries or suspensions.
